NCAA waives win requirements for bowl eligibility for 2020 season

Every FBS team is eligible to play in a bowl game in 2020.

The NCAA’s Division I Council announced on Wednesday that it has waived bowl eligibility requirements for the 2020-21 bowl season only. It also waived the minimum number of contests required for FBS teams.

Under ordinary circumstances, teams must have a .500 record to qualify for a bowl game (sometimes a 5-7 team will get a bowl bid if there aren’t enough .500 teams), but the Football Oversight Committee recommended getting rid of that rule for the current season, as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to linger and cause the postponement and cancellation of games.

Snip-

"As long as a school meets Academic Progress Rate requirements, it could technically be invited to play in a bowl game even if it is winless. There are currently 39 bowl games in place for this season, so only 78 of the 127 FBS teams playing will fill those slots."

So now bowl games have become on the level of getting participation trophies, blue ribbons, and juice boxes. Will sponsors be forced to have bowls under these circumstances?

Don't even get me started on what shenanigans the PAC-12 is doing in this.

Wow, there are 39 bowl games? I didn’t know there were so many.

I can only think of a few, such as the Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and the granddaddy of them all, the Rose Bowl.

It sounds as if they will be scrambling to recruit teams to play in these games.

The way things are going, will fans be allowed at some of these games? Will the organizers of the bowls take a financial bath if they can’t sell tickets to the games?

We haven’t even turned it on this year.

First time ever. Not a single game.

NCAAF can got to Hades with our blessing.

And take pro sports with it.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see more of the minor bowls cancel. They would take a severe financial hit without fans in attendance.

I was just thinking the same thing. The minor bowls don't get nearly as much TV money as the biggies, so without fans buying tickets, eating out, renting hotel rooms, etc., those bowl games could generate a net loss.

The Hawaii Bowl and Bahamas Bowl have already canceled, citing travel difficulties.

What’s the fun of going to a bowl game if you are going to be locked-down in your hotel and then play in an empty or mostly empty stadium?

Along with all of the BLM preaching from players and coaches and commentators, this is just another reason not to care. For the first time in 35 years, I have not watched a single college football game. I used to love the arrival of college football season, and every fall I followed the weekly rankings faithfully. Each Saturday, I was glued to my TV watching the variety of games on different networks. This year, I have no idea which teams are ranked or who is playing from week to week. This lifelong college football fan won’t be coming back either.

Re 39 bowls: I’m guessing some of those won’t have bowl games this season. Many are played in nearly empty stadiums anyway.

Bowls are just TV shows, nothing more. Instead of paying actors and actresses, they have bowl payouts. Fans are just bonus $$$.

Once you look at it with that lens, you don't get all bent about crappy teams playing each other.

[[[Wow, there are 39 bowl games?]]]

Yes, last year’s “Ed’s Transmission Bowl” was extremely exciting at 2 AM.

The NCAA and their masters, the Cartel5, have ruined college sports.

I grew up in the Sugar, Cotton, Orange, Gator, and Rose Bowl days. They really meant something when there were only 7 to 9 bowl games.

My daughter’s school, the University of North Texas in Denton, played in the Heart of Dallas Bowl her sophomore year. Not even the Heart of TEXAS Bowl. They won. Mean Joe Green got all excited.

At least in the beginning, I thought the college football games were an add-on to some kind of local festival (The Tournament of Roses had a football game added to the parade and other activities), so if the local event is canceled because of COVID how much interest is generated to bring in a bunch of tourists for a one-day event / football game to begin with?
