City urges onlookers to stay away from sinkhole
The Gainesville Sun ^ | 30 Oct 2020 | STAFF

Gainesville city officials warned Friday that a northwest area sinkhole continues to grow and onlookers who try to get an up-close peek are taking a risk.

City officials advised looky loos to steer clear, and said they were installing a six-foot chain link fence around the sinkhole Friday to keep people off the property.

These scenes are so strange because whatever volume of earth was in the hole had to go somewhere, somehow.

I mean how does that work? Aliens?

Is there some other yard “downstream” of the underground earth river that gets a few million dumptrucks full of fill, or what?

Does it flow into the ocean, creating a new island?

(Okay, I *cound* look it up, but that’s no fun).

I hope the homeowner has a place to go, besides into the new, bigger pool. :(

For those not familiar with sinkholes, the USGS writes:
Sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or rocks that can naturally be dissolved by groundwater circulating through them. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground. Sinkholes are dramatic because the land usually stays intact for a while until the underground spaces just get too big. If there is not enough support for the land above the spaces, then a sudden collapse of the land surface can occur. These collapses can be small, or, as this picture shows, or they can be huge and can occur where a house or road is on top.

An obvious fake voter registration location.

No way would a symbol of oppression be used for voter registration. The ironing board has a long and sordid history of males dominating females.

More likely hardcore conservatives having a bit of fun.
You can’t vote with a fake voter registration card, except in Chicago, NYC, L.A. ...

“So naturally half the town is trying to get a look at it.”

The owner says he does not have sinkhole insurance; for a couple of bucks unlimited viewing from his back deck.

90 feet in diameter, 50 feet deep; about 10,000+ cubic yards...
Maybe he could open a garbage dump?

A zip line across it?

That or just leave it?

My Army Reserve unit used to go for annual training/ARTEP at Camp Blanding, the FLANG HQ post northeast of Gainesville.

We sometimes went swimming while there, at Sand Hill Lake.

We always had an alligator guard with an M16 sitting on the hood of the Duece and a half!

It was the ‘80s so the pythons hadn’t arrived yet, lol.

A sinkhole in the northwest part of town has continued to grow since it was first discovered. It eventually consumed a swimming pool.

Yep- like i said, i wasn’t too observant when i posted the photo- and i didn’t go to the link- was just curious if the photo i posted was the same scene- as i hadn’t seen the pool in the hole- but i guess it was an earlier photo- from what someone said

You know it’s really hard to tell because the gray house looks different. I assumed your picture was taken before the pool feel into the sinkhole. Mine was taken from the article, and I assumed yours was too, and that the picture ad changed from when you saw the article .

Next year this time that’ll be a lake front home. Those things fill up with water in no time.

no i looked up gainsville sink hole, and then went to images in yahoo search- then tried comparing it to the one from the actual article posted here on FR- the house did look a little different, but the angle i think was throwing me off- but the bush overhanging the sinkhole kinda looked the same- so i wasn’t sure-

At any rate- sinkholes are a bummer for those living near them if they keep creeping towards the home- uggh- wouldn’t want to have to deal with that- but at least there is time to prepare sometimes- knew folks who lost a home due to fire- nothing prepares you for that- (or hurricanes, tornadoes etc- all horrible to live through- sinkholes can be a creeping disaster i guess kinda like spreading wildfires- but i always find sinkholes fascinating (if they don’t do damage to homes)

I climbed down the Devil’s Millhopper a couple of times in the 60’s... at the bottom the aquifer broke the surface and it was easy to find ancient shark’s teeth. If memory serves it was the north side that was easiest to climb down - anyhow every few years someone would die when they slipped. It was one of those ‘better pay attention to what you’re doing’ kind of places... Beautiful ... but not for the faint of heart.
