Monthly Cooking Thread, November 2020

A recent Lee Valley newsletter had an article on carrots - harvesting, storing; and included a 'refrigerator pickle' recipe for carrots that looks very easy and good:

I recently purchased one of these embossed rolling pins; a lot of them appear to come from Poland, as mine did; but I received mine very quickly. Haven't tried it yet, but am looking forward to using it for Christmas. They make many different designs, including one with reindeer and Christmas trees, which I also want to buy for a darker, spicy cookie. (They generally come with recipes; but if you search for 'embossed rolling pin recipes', you can find recipes for different flavors of cookies, and good instructions on how to make the best use of the pin - you want a rather stiff, somewhat shortbread-like dough, well-chilled.)

After seeing a video recently, I found myself wondering what would be the most fun job in the world. Among those I personally came up with, Ravenmaster in the Tower of London had to be near the top of the list. (Imagine a Corvid three or four times the size of the crows that most of us are used to seeing - with a wingspan of up to, and possibly more than, four feet!)

The current Ravenmaster is Christopher Skaife; he's written a book, and has often been interviewed and featured (along with the Queen's birds) in news stories:

Two things that I just learned from you:

Pickling carrots is a thing, and that a Ravenmaster is not just a fake movie character.

Evening. I was just wishing for your soothing & delightful thread. The rolling pin is beautiful. I have some cookie stamps.
Speaking of cookies. When I visit my in laws in MA there is a cookie & cake place called Veronica’s Sweetcakes. I actually have an envelope of saved up cash. I use said cash to buy enormous amounts of cookies & eat them. Cookies are my very favorite sweet item.

I’m partial to cookies, too. I tend to like my sweets full of fat :-)

How do you keep the cookie dough from sticking to the stamp?

Love the embossed roller. What brand was it? Would love to get one from Poland like you did.

I’ve put carrots in an empty pickle jar with the old brine and it works well.

There’s a story about one of the ravens at the Tower.

Apparently, one day they found a raven dead, flat on its back, legs sticking up in the air. There was a lot of consternation over this death, with people standing around and looking at it.

Apparently, another raven noticed all the attention the dead one was getting and, according to Skaife, began a practice of ‘playing dead’ for the tourists, to get attention of its own.

Tasha Tudor kept birds, including doves and parrots. She trained one parrot to ‘play dead’, which she would then serve up at dinner on a parsley-lined platter. (Scroll down a little):

look for ‘embossed rolling pin’ on Etsy. There are several different Polish vendors selling lots of nice designs.

Me too. Butter and tomatoes are gifts from God.

But His blessing lately is TRUMP

Beer. Don't forget Beer.

But Benjamin Franklin didn't actually say that 'beer is proof that God loves us'. He actually wrote about wine; or rather, he used wine as an example of a 'miraculous' conversion, in a paen to God's providence:

“We hear of the conversion of water into wine at the marriage in Cana, as of a miracle. But this conversion is, through the goodness of God, made every day before our eyes. Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards, and which incorporates itself with the grapes to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.”

I am absolutely embarrassed to say that I have never used my cookie stamps.....hangs head in shame. Now I pretty much have to don’t I? I will let you know as soon as I try them out.

If that is you in the towel you are very adorable.
