‘Why did it take nine hours to go 130 miles in our new electric Porsche?’
The Guardian ^ | 28 Nov 2020 | Miles Brignall

Linda Barnes and her husband had to visit six charging stations as one after another they were either out of order, already had a queue or were the slow, older versions that would never be able to provide a fast enough charge in the time.

The couple, who love their new fully electric Porsche Taycan 4S, which has a range of about 250 miles, contacted the Guardian to describe how difficult it is to recharge a car away from home. Their journey would have taken two and a half hours in a conventional car, they say.

Linda says the sense of relief was enormous. “We ran through the entire gamut of emotions in those nine hours – resignation, range anxiety, annoyance and disbelief that this was happening – and finally elation when we realised we’d get home,” she says.

I think an EV is a good solution for local driving. The Nissan Leaf looked good, but our son lives in a distant suburb, a round trip was at the limit. My wife selected a Prius V, I love it.

I have a friend with a Leaf who loves it - but he doesn’t have to drive far. I used to enjoy having a small motorcycle for the same reason.

If the car has a range of 250 miles and the trip was 130 miles, why were they stopping to recharge?

Look on the bright side. That’s still better than Fred could do.

>p>Back when I was a child, I read Tom Swift And His Electric Car. As I recall, Tom was always interrupting his chase of the bad guys to get a recharge from a trolley line.

They bought a ridiculously expensive(probably subsidized), very limited range automobile to make them feel morally superior. Now they expect taxpayers to throw even more money down a rat hole so they can use it.

I might do a hybrid at some point, but I’d never do a plug in electric.

At least Texas is talking about taxing electric vehicles.

If it was a British-made car I would have assumed part of the time was spent getting it off the jacks and putting the wheels back on it.

Why did they leave home with 45 mile range left on an electric car to begin with? Also depending on the battery many vehicles can go 100s of miles without a new charge. Not that I don’t have my gripes about FORCING electric cars n us. IT IS WRONG and ANTI- AMERICAN. But these two were not living in the real world of smart trip planning.

It will take the British a long time to develop an electric car as they’ll still have to figure out some way of getting it to drip engine oil on the driveway.
