The Marine Corps is conducting random drug testing at one base in North Carolina because of reports that personnel there are using the hallucinogenic drug lysergic acid diethylamide, better known as LSD.
The 2nd Marine Division in Jacksonville, North Carolina, has conducted nearly 4,000 random tests for LSD since the start of the summer.
Maj. Gen. Francis L. Donovan, the division commander, said the recent rise in LSD use among sailors and Marines on the base has prompted them to change how they test for illegal substances.
In the past, the Department of Defense drug lab only accepted individual samples for LSD testing as part of a larger law enforcement investigation. Because of the spike in LSD use at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, random testing for LSD is now an option, officials said.
“We have a drug problem in the 2nd Marine Division,” Maj. Gen. Donovan said in a statement. “We are committed to identifying the violators of our ethos. The vast majority of Marines within the 2nd Marine Division routinely uphold our core values and they deserve to know that the Marines to their left and right are doing the same.”

After 2 hours post-ingestion, only 1% to 10% of LSD will have remained unchanged in urine, the rest will consist of inactive, water-soluble metabolites (e.g. 2-oxo-3-hydroxy LSD). Though LSD is rapidly metabolized and processed, it is thought to remain in the blood, brain, and other organs in varying amounts for up to 8 hours.

I’m guessing the trend started because LSD isn’t picked up in the drug test kits that they normally run for employee drug screening. Those check only for cannabis, cocaine, opiates, and amphetamines, I believe. MDMA would probably be detected as well since it’s closely related to amphetamines.
Marines are reportedly using LSD.
Washington has ordered them to take Addison to the Kennedy.

Well, the average trip lasts 8-12 hours so obviously something is remaining in the body longer than 8 hours...

Ah, I long for the good old days, when our soldiers were on LSD because Uncle Sam was using them as lab rats for mind control experiments.

I was thinking the same thing!
Ugh, why would you ever take that crap, especially in the military? All it does it make the user schizophrenic. I took it in the 1970s when I was 18 and it was horrific, the paranoia was unbelievable and it seemed like I would never come down. And this went on while I was a messenger boy in New York city, my first job. I was making deliveries all over the place on my bike completely out of my mind. I thought gravity was a giant magnet underground, I thought everyone was out to get me. I remember pulling over and sitting on this cement block trying to get my head together, it literally makes you insane and i never took it again.
Random drug testing should be mandatory for all military personnel........
A close friend's son died of an overdose a bunch of years ago. He was a West Point grad who got his appointment to the academy from his CO when he was just an enlistee.
He was severely injured in Iraq with a broken back and recuperated at Ft. Hood. He was then reassigned to West Point as a class advisor and that's where he died.
While my friend has never discussed the circumstances of his son, my thoughts are he became addicted to opioids due to his injury..........
I take it LSD isn’t Landing Ship, Dock in this context?
