A group of cyclists were riding and had a Subaru hatchback "safety car" assigned to trail them when they were hit about 9:30 a.m. on southbound U.S. Highway 95 near Mile Marker 36, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Travis Smaka.
A southbound truck "entered into the group of bicyclists, some of them were traveling behind the safety vehicle, they were struck, the safety vehicle was also struck as well as some the bicyclists in front of the safety vehicle," Smaka said.
The five cyclists were pronounced dead at the scene, south of Boulder City and north of Searchlight. One bicyclist suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to University Medical Center, officials said.

What in the world is wrong with people these days that they can’t stay in their lane ESPECIALLY when pedestrians are nearby??? A coworker’s dear daughter was hit and killed when her car broke down on side of the road a couple months ago. I just don’t get it.
Why blame the truck driver when vehicles routinely travel at 75mph+ on these open roads. A bicycle is doing what? 15 mph? That begs the question, why in tarnation would someone in their right mind get on a bicycle go anywhere near a venue like that? That’s down right suicide from my perspective.
Never ride on roads with cars and trucks. Always felt unsafe whenever I have done so. Sad.
Not casting blame but the worst people on the road for following rules are male bicyclists. They put motorcycle riders to shame for disregard to public and personal safety.
If you get a group of idiot bicyclists meeting a speeding truck driven by a drunk or drugged guy...
There is no bike lane out there but there are bicycle debris all over the traffic lanes. See the photos. That’s pretty damning evidence in defense of the truck driver.
In the past, I’ve done multiple Davis Doubles and Markleeville Death Rides. My last hooray was the Seattle to Portland, which I was unable to finish due to a hip problem. Was in a small bike shop team, and we used to burn the Davis Double in just over 13 hours.
Curious, how do motorcyclist put the public in danger?
"...why is there bicycle debris..."
Five fewer road hazards for drivers.
The truck was obviously going very fast in order to cause that much damage to the truck. Why was it that the driver apparently didn’t slow down very much if at all prior to colliding?
So according to you they were all out of traffic lanes, free and clear of traffic, yet their is bicycle debris and what appears to be a covered up body, all over the traffic lanes?
Don’t try and sell that in court.
[If they were riding on the shoulder when hit, why is there bicycle debris all over the traffic lanes? See upper right side of image. ]
Right. because if a truck hits a bicycle at 75mph no debris is going to go flying......
As a FORMER hardcore cyclist, I can say that MOST riders have about as much respect for drivers as chickens do for the fox: NONE until the henhouse is breached, then they scream at the top of their lungs about how they must be respected. That they show NO respect to their fellow road users matters not, they are CYCLISTS!
Add in the entitled mindset of the millennial, and here we are.
The driver was probably driving for a long time on that stretch at probably 70 mph or so, and suddenly came across some people who thought it was be cool to ride their bicycles at 15mph out there. Deadly stupid choice.
I lived near the trace in Jackson Mississippi where the old trace ran through my grandmas property and now near Nashville I’m also near the trace at the northern terminus
Bikes have right of way to even ride abreast here
Wonder more aren’t killed on the trace honestly
ProAm team?
That stretch of highway is miles and miles of flat straightway.
That’s why they have collision investigators and re-constructionist. They’ll confirm what I’m telling you now. No way that much debris gets in traffic lanes without some of those people being in the traffic lanes to begin with.
