A group of cyclists were riding and had a Subaru hatchback "safety car" assigned to trail them when they were hit about 9:30 a.m. on southbound U.S. Highway 95 near Mile Marker 36, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Travis Smaka.
A southbound truck "entered into the group of bicyclists, some of them were traveling behind the safety vehicle, they were struck, the safety vehicle was also struck as well as some the bicyclists in front of the safety vehicle," Smaka said.
The five cyclists were pronounced dead at the scene, south of Boulder City and north of Searchlight. One bicyclist suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to University Medical Center, officials said.

“There is no bike lane out there but there are bicycle debris all over the traffic lanes.”
Do you actually think that the bike riders equipment, gear and pieces of the bike, are going to stay in one place when hit by a truck doing 70MPH.
Have you every heard of physics or even played a game of pool?
I know this stretch of road. The pictuer in post one by Ben Lurkin is just after coming off the highway past Rail Road Pass Casino onto the streatch of 95 to Searchlight.
Btw, I never said, suggested or implied I knew all the facts here. I'm just stating the obvious regarding bicycling on desert highways.
Btw, were you a fireman playing investigator?
“If they were riding on the shoulder when hit, the truck driver might be facing serious prison time.”
I’m not sure of Nevada’s laws on bicycles but in most states a bike is a legal “VEHICLE” and has rights to part of the road too.
Bikes are usually regulated away from freeways and that kind of traffic but if you look at the pics you can see this is split traffic but not a freeway or anything like it.
If you think about it for a moment, in most states, bikes have to follow the rules of other vehicles because they too are “VEHICLES.”
Some folks have trouble realizing that in most states, while riding where allowed, bike riders have as much right to the road as cars do.
Yes. Do you actually think every bit of debris created by an impact does not drop straight down? Trust me here, it does. This is one of the ways investigators determine the point of impact especially if the scene lacks pre-impact or post impact tire scuff marks.
“So what if they were.”
Incredulous that you think it’s incredulous that people would be scattered far and wide after being struck in traffic lanes.
Cyclists are often like antifa, they got ‘rights’, esp WestCoast.
One more time, of course debris and bodies will fly in a violent impact. But...there will always be some debris that will fall nearly straight down at the point of impact, like car parts, small pieces of safety glass etc. The investigators will follow the pieces back to where they begin to help determine point of impact. This is pretty basic stuff.
Looks like the route from the base of Lake Mead to Boulder city. If so, that’s a surprisingly dodgy route.
You bet they do and the cemeteries are full of them.
Actually, looking closer at the debris field in that image and where it’s located in traffic lanes, and then looking at the truck damage to the right front of the vehicle...If the bicycles were off to the right, OUT of traffic lanes at the point of impact, there would have little or no debris in the traffic lanes and most of the debris would have been off to the right, on the shoulder, past the fog line (solid white line). So it’s a good bet at least some of the bicycles and their so call safety car where in the #2 lane of traffic at point of impact.
You describe what some refer to as Critical Mass-holes.
With rights come responsibilities. Most states have laws prohibiting obstruction of traffic. Sensible cyclists recognize this, and avoid causing this problem for their own protection.
Some, however, obstruct deliberately, especially when they ride in packs, and they pick and choose which traffic laws apply to them.
These are general comments, and I'm not in any way saying this is the case here. That's up to the police to decide.
There appears to be plenty of riding space outside the fog lane. I don’t know if Nevada has a legal minimum legal speed limit but some states do. I prefer they not ride on public highways.
Right? Like, do you hang out at school crossing zones and wait for kids to walk by and then accelerate? I bet you are one of those amazing people who pass school buses with stop signs out and red flashing lights. The important thing is that you can get where you want to go, regardless of anyone else.
Cell phones. Everyone is on their cell phones. I see truck drivers watch tv in their trucks too. Not all, but some.
What the hell were a bunch of damn bicyclists doing on RT 95?????
The survivors should all be arrested and the truck driver given an accolade.
I hate those arrogant bicyclists
9:30 AM? Pic’s show flat terrain. Yeah, something stinks about this.
Recalling SEVEN motorcyclists killed at once in NH two years ago.
A person was driving the truck of peace
