After five years and $8 million dollars, sustainable seafood alternative company New Wave Foods is ready to launch its first product: plant-based shrimp.

The shrimp alternative, which the company says has the same flavor and “snap” texture of real shrimp, is made of seaweed and plant proteins derived from mung beans. New Wave Foods is also announcing that it closed an $18 million Series A funding round, led by New Enterprise Associates and Evolution VC Partners (Tyson Ventures, the VC arm of Tyson Foods, had invested in the company in 2019), which will help it scale up its shrimp alternative and bring other plant-based seafoods to market.

Farming shrimp leads to the destruction of natural habitats, including devastating mangroves, to make room for the shrimp farms, and it uses organic waste, chemicals, and antibiotics that can pollute the water. The shrimp industry is also rife with slavery and human rights abuses; an Associated Press investigation in 2015 found that markets in Thailand were using slaves to peel shrimp, which were eventually sold to major U.S. retailers such as Wal-Mart,

I have a bag of Wild Caught Gulf shrimp thawing out right now.

I distrust any vegetable masquerading as meat. The processes they typically go though remove most of the healthy parts of the plant. Want a vegetable based diet, eat a vegetable.

I actually like imitation crab, “K Crab”. Substitute for tuna in salad, it’s actually not bad. Shrimp from seaweed and beans though, I don’t think so.

Farm raised shrimp are my favorite. Nice flesh no iodine taste often encounter with wild caught.

Health nuts constantly harp on Americans to avoid highly processed foods and now they want us to stuff our gobs with frankenstein factory meat? I will take a pass on eating fake meat.

Is actually made from wild-caught Hake. However, there is a good bit of processing before it becomes fake crab.

Back in the day there was a huge completion to find a use for hake since the fisheries departments were enacting draconian regulations on commercial bottom draggers because so much of their catch was hake - for which there was no market and was dumped over the side.

So after many many tries someone found the correct formula to turn the hake flesh from a mushy pulp into something firm which could then be processed into something else and made edible, which the Japanese named surimi. The red color is just red food dye. It is better for you than farmed salmon or farmed shrimp

allegedly there is a mushroom (pom pom/Lion’s Mane) that can be used in place of crabmeat. And it supposedly has good properties against mental decline.
