Macaque monkeys at a Bali temple can spot expensive items to steal and ransom for food
St. Louis Post Dispatch ^ | Jan 16, 2021

The paper, published in a Royal Society science journal, studied monkeys at Uluwatu Temple in Bali, Indonesia, who frequently steal items from humans -- such as bags, hats, sunglasses, tablets and phones -- and hold them to ransom in exchange for offerings of food.

It found adult wild long-tailed macaque monkeys were intelligent enough to comprehend which items had the highest value to the visitors, such as an electronic item, and would only release it after receiving food they perceived to be of corresponding value.

The authors said the behavior displayed "unprecedented economic decision-making processes" among the monkeys observed as part of the study.

Not at the Uluwatu temple but at the Ubud Monkey Forest.

I went to this temple in 2001 and we were warned then the monkeys would try to steal items of value.

I think they know something is of value by our behaviour. The more we spend time with it and checking it, it tells them what we value.

We would be better off if these thieves replaced the current gang of DC Swamp thieves.

To know value, the monkeys may steal the usual things, whatever they can grab and take.
Or, some monkeys may judge the value of an object by how upset the human tourist gets when that object has been snatched away.
IOW, if the owner of the stolen goods did not exhibit much of a reaction, some monkeys may simply discard their booty.

I think this is hilarious.

(The ‘Funny’ experience I’ve had visiting the monkey house at the National Zoo is that I always see at least one monkey who looks like someone I know.)

Monkeys are very smart.

I remember a story from Africa, where the men would go off hunting. When they were fine, these monkeys would raid their gardens and the women couldn’t stop them.

The women tried to dress like then men to dissuade the monkeys from raiding the gardens. All the Monkeys did was motion towards the breast area to show they were not fooled even a bit.

I think so, but that may take some conditioning because they would at least start off with stealing them anyway.

They probably know the value that something has for us by the effort - or tribute - we will put forth to get it back.

They aren’t stupid - like most animals, they adapt and learn from their environments. (I think we share over 90% of our DNA with monkeys and other NHPs.)
