“In everyone’s life there’s a summer of ’42.”
Summer of '42 is a 1971 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film based on the memoirs of screenwriter Herman Raucher. It tells the story of how Raucher, in his early teens on his 1942 summer vacation on Nantucket Island (off the coast of Cape Cod), embarks on a one-sided romance with a young woman, Dorothy, whose husband has gone off to fight in World War II.
The film was directed by Robert Mulligan, and starred Gary Grimes as Hermie, Jerry Houser as his best friend Oscy, Oliver Conant as their nerdy young friend Benjie, Jennifer O'Neill as the mysterious woman with whom Hermie becomes involved.
Nantucket Island was too far modernized in 1970 to be convincingly transformed to resemble an early 1940s resort, so production was taken to Mendocino, California, on the West Coast of the US.Shooting took place over eight weeks, during which O'Neill was sequestered from the three boys cast as "The Terrible Trio," in order to ensure that they did not become close and ruin the sense of awkwardness and distance that their characters felt towards Dorothy.
The movie earned an Academy Award – Original Dramatic Score – for Michel Legrand.

“A Summer Place” and “Summer of ‘42”. Those evoke some fond memories for me.
Bfl...
The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming was filmed in Mendocino too (not in Cape Cod).
Oh to have a chance to be Herbie, just for that afternoon . . .
Actually went to see this at the movies with a date when it came out, when I was 16 in high school. I could totally relate to the movie, as I was young and young guys were getting killed in Vietnam at the time. It’s a classic movie for me.
I still remember the date I was with when I saw this movie.
I once knew a girl from Nantucket
Hermie..short for Herman. Thought the locations would be under water. Globull climate change and all
i so remember that movie
Wonderful movie, thanks for posting.
I recall a shiny Maserati that looked very out of place in the rustic little town.
Jennifer O'Neill was seriously lovely.
Beautiful & heartbreaking. Everyone was perfectly cast.
I’m proud to say that I have Jennifer O’Neill’s number in my cell phone. She was on my old radio show and is lovely as ever. Very down to earth and so appreciative of that role she played.
Great movies, great music. However I did like the movie, Summer of 42 better, but I like the music from Summer Place better.
You think men would have learned valuable lessons from this movie about the nature of women.
But almost none did.
Summer of 42 was great...a Summer Place was an absolute scream..lol..every time its on i watch it!!!....Super virgin Sandra Dee...her crazy, psycho mother...dorky Troy Donohue...100% camp gold...
the female brain at times leaves me speechless...
Wow. Saw the movie a long time ago and read the book. Loved them both.
Will have to see/read them again. Thanks for the memories.
Russians Are Coming would have filmed on Cape Ann if it were on location. Definitely not Cape Cod.
