Tiger Woods is 'awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room' after extensive surgery on Tuesday to his lower right leg and ankle, following a crash in California that police said he was lucky to survive.

Woods, 45, was put under general anesthetic at Harbor-UCLA hospital as surgeons fitted metal rods, screws and pins to his shattered right shinbone and calf bone following the crash, which happened around 7.15am Tuesday in south Los Angeles.

Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer at the hospital, said Woods suffered comminuted open fractures of his tibia and fibula - where the bone splinters into two or more pieces and comes through the skin - and had a rod inserted in his tibia, with his foot and ankle 'stabilized with a combination of screws and pins'.

Good lord...that is what happened to Joe Theisman and Alex Smith. The biggest risk is infection.

Ben Hogan won a few more majors after his big wreck, but Hogan didn’t suffer the bad back like Tiger.

How many car accidents happened yesterday in the world? Tell me why we should care about this one over any other?

Ive been treating back pain for over 30 years. 1000s of cases. I can count on one hand the number of successful back fusions. More than one? None.

Woods , IMO, suffered from iatrogenic back pain. 5 operations?

I cannot believe that his surgeons served him well.

I’m sure the first guy wanted the reputation of having operated on Tiger Woods.

He’ll survive this, and go on to play golf. But to walk the course? Doubt it.

By the look of car’s path, I would say that the car slices to the left. and he ended up in the rough.

Remember Ben Hogan’s remarkable recovery; https://newyorknewstimes.com/tiger-woods-car-accident-that-resembles-the-eerie-of-ben-hogans-violent-wreck/120853/

Golf legend Ben Hogan was once seriously injured in a car accident that resembled an eerie one. Tiger Woods crash on Tuesday — And I’m back to win six more majors.

Hogan, who died in 1997 at the age of 84, almost died in February 1949 when a Greyhound bus crashed into a black Cadillac while driving with his wife in Texas. According to the golf channel..

The crash caused Hogan a clavicle fracture, a rib fracture, an ankle fracture, a double pelvic fracture, and a deep contusion in his left leg.

Doctors at El Paso Hospital, where Hogan was taken, feared he could not survive the injury, but Hogan recovered and returned to the green in less than a year.
