Happy Pi Day!
Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π. Pi Day is observed on March 14 since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. It was founded in 1988 by Larry Shaw, an employee of the Exploratorium. Celebrations often involve eating pie or holding pi recitation competitions. Wikipedia
Date: Sunday, 14 March 2021 Celebrations: Pie eating, discussions about π
Significance: 3, 1, and 4 are the three most significant figures of π in its decimal representation
My family and I celebrated by having pie (key lime) at 1:59 and followed up with pizza for supper—I wearing my Pi Day shirt of course.
As only Kate Bush can.
Today after early worship our family group went to Cracker Barrell for Brunch. A placcard on our table featured Buttermilk Pie. Never heard of it. Prolly a deep south treat. Since it’s Pie Day I ordered a slice to go. Had it for dessert a bit ago. Not bad. A mite sweet for me. I like plain old egg custard better; whether in a pie or just in a custard cup. But it was a fun experiment on Pie Day.
Wait, I thought Pie are squared?
And, off course, it is not yet pi hour, pi minute, or pi second ...
3.14:159265358979 ?
Well, then, 15.9265358979 hours = 15:55:59.215387
(Or 3:55:59 and a few seconds in the afternoon.)
BUT! Daylights Savings Time? Greenwich Mean Time?
Which longitude? (15 degrees per hour, ya know.)
22/7 gets you close and it’s easy to work with.
i might circle back to this thread
Nah. As engineer, we memorized to 15 digits. Same with square root of 2, e, nu, Avogadro’s number, bunch of others ... Never bothered getting real accurate with the speed of light though. 186,000 is close enough.
For all the 1st gen automated drafting types:
3, 1, 4 = C.A.D.!!
This song was also covered by Anne Sofie Von Otter.
I believe Sinead O'Connor might be coming out with a version as well, I would look forward to that as Sinead has a nice Irish voice.
186,200 miles per second. 15 digits is crazy.
Thanks for the reminder, it’s been a while since I last made a pie. New York Grape Pie is one of the best.
Also my Anniversary!
