Bernie Madoff, whose $65 billion Ponzi scheme made him one of the world’s most hated criminals and destroyed even his own family, died Wednesday at the secure federal medical center in Butner, North Carolina, where he was serving a 150-year prison sentence, according to prison officials.
The Associated Press reported the 82-year-old scam king, who had been suffering from end-stage kidney disease and other chronic ailments, died of natural causes.
Madoff would have turned 83 on April 29.
His epic stock fraud, which came to light amid the global financial crisis of the late 2000s and remains the biggest in Wall Street history, left more than 37,000 victims in 136 countries in its wake.
Burned investors ranged from retirees who entrusted him with their lives’ savings to celebrities such as Hollywood power couple Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, former Disney studio chief Jeffrey Katzenberg and legendary baseball Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax.

Madoff was unrepentant to the end. He had nothing but derision and hate for his victims.
I was just thinking about him the other day.
We had a cattle operation here in eastern Washington that supplied beef cattle to Tyson. The CEO was huge into commodities trading, and apparently wasn’t very good at it, had lost over $200 million.
During that time he was making commodity trades he concocted a scheme to sell cattle to Tyson, on paper, to the tune of $250 million plus. He would bill Tyson for their feed and care and then claim he shipped them to their local plant. Were talking hundreds of thousands of head of cattle over several years so it took some time for them to catch on. It was eventually discovered this past October but wasn’t publicly announced. Along about that time the CEO’s 80+ year old father died in what was a reported head on collision between his pickup and one of his own corporate semi-trucks. Then about a month later this scam hit the news. Speculation is that the father was in on the scam and committed suicide instead of going to prison. Now the CEO just plead guilty and faces over 20 years.
So my thought was if they were going to put him in the same cell as Bernie.
Watch the episode of “American Greed”. Madoff couldn’t care less but he earned the wages of sin. One son died of a suicide after he went to prison as he couldn’t take the slings and arrows that his father brought upon him and the other son died of cancer. I’d rather be penniless than live as that man did.

Up on those family details about the Madoff clan. The stink was so bad, the entire family imploded.
But it wasn’t unmerited. They worked with Madoff and claimed not to know.
Most doubt that to be the case.
Fate has intervened. They did a lot of damage.

It is my understanding that the court appointed liquidator has brought that number under $20 billion.
Legally, they were able to claw back a lot of dividend money from long time investors who did not get completely wiped out like the most recent investors did.

Duhh and not that it matters but sorry he apparently died from Kidney Disease and other chronic medical conditions which in my book aint natural causes.
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgewick lost all of their money to Madoff.
Probably why I see them still working; Kevin is doing commercials left and right and Kyra is in a new gawd-awful sit-com that probably won’t last a season.
Loved her in ‘The Closer’ and Kevin in too many movies to mention other than, ‘Footloose’ of course. ;)

Concur; the sons’ excuse was that they worked for a different Madoff company and the investment scam was run out of Bernie’s office on the 18th floor where they never went and had no idea what went on there. Sure.
Haven’t heard what his wife is doing. I would guess she’s never gotten off that money train. Should have been so bad that she also would end up working for an hourly wage. Again I really don’t know what happened to her after the feds took what was readily available.
Watched an episode yesterday where their daughter Sosie Bacon guest starred and Kevin directed. Seem like decent people.
