They may be tiny weapons, but Brigham Young University's holography research group has figured out how to create lightsabers -- green for Yoda and red for Darth Vader, naturally -- with actual luminous beams rising from them.
Inspired by the displays of science fiction, the researchers have also engineered battles between equally small versions of the Starship Enterprise and a Klingon Battle Cruiser that incorporate photon torpedoes launching and striking the enemy vessel that you can see with the naked eye.
"This is not like the movies, where the lightsabers or the photon torpedoes never really existed in physical space. These are real, and if you look at them from any angle, you will see them existing in that space."
The research group's new project, funded by a National Science Foundation CAREER grant, goes to the next level and produces simple animations in thin air. The development paves the way for an immersive experience where people can interact with holographic-like virtual objects that co-exist in their immediate space.

Not that I pretend to understand this but I wonder if any of this kind of science is what is behind the seeing of ghosts?
Some say it is what people think are UFO’s and could account for the nearly impossible maneuvers they can perform.
A hologram is basically intersecting points of light that are visible to the human eye.
I’d love to see the day when I could have an AI companion to converse with. It would be better than a teacher.
I am waiting for the time, but probably never will see it as I am too old, when holographic projection devices will become available for home use and are adjustable according to he room size and the whole movie or whatever else will be projected happens right in front of the observer in a three dimensional format. What ever company comes out with such a system will have a goldmine. At first it probably will be prohibitive expensive, just like the first VHS players or flat panel TV, but over time the price will come down.
It is certainly possible. They are only telling us about hologram advancements because they’ve gone well beyond this technology.
I prefer the big screen experience.
3D holograms would always have to be tiny for it to be in front of you.
Holograms are racist.
Did I say that? I meant "Holodeck"
When Biden falls up the steps on AF1 I think what you are seeing are teething problems with the focusing of the light beams.

The porn industry will be all over this or maybe just Laz
I was touring the r&d group at a major cell phone company about 15 years ago. One of the things they were experimenting with was a pad you could put on your arm and it would vibrate if someone sent you a certain text message with a certain message in it. The idea was someone could send you a hug. So I looked at it and I turned to the ladies demonstrating it and said, so, you can put this device anywhere on your body and someone else can make it vibrate via their phone. Is that right?
Awkward silence.
