U.S. researchers find drug blocks severe COVID-19 symptoms in mice, including variants

Researchers affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania have found that the drug diABZI was highly effective at preventing severe COVID-19 symptoms in mice that were infected with multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants, as described in their paper published in Science Immunology on May 18.

The researchers found that SARS-CoV-2 hides to avoid the activation of interferons, which are proteins that signal the presence of a virus, in the respiratory tract's epithelial cells. This results in a delayed immune response, which allows the virus to infect the respiratory tract.

The researchers sought out to look into additional immune pathways. They looked at diABZI, which has been characterized as a STING agonist. STING agonists are drugs that activate STING, which stands for the stimulation of interferon genes.

A total of 129 mice with COVID-19 were treated with diABZI. When measured against a control group, the mice that had been treated with the drug saw less weight loss and a lower viral load.

So what are we up to now in effective therapeutics against the China Virus? It must be about 5 or so that have been shown to work well in reducing the effects of the illness and shortening its duration.

They seemingly are being used and will continue to be used as long as Trump doesn't endorse any of them < sarc

Mice were pretreated with diABZI via intranasal route at day (D)-1, and given a second dose at the time of inoculation (D0) of SARS-CoV-2.

Reading the study, it looks like they drugged the mice before exposing them to the virus, eliminating the viruses "head start" in infecting the lungs. By the time you test positive, it's probably too late for this drug.

I got the ‘gist’ that an early interferon boost could help with covid and many other viruses... Or maybe just new ones...
You’d have to catch it early, maybe while asymptomatic, or just very soon after symptoms.
