Washington Post Reporter Pushes False Info About Gov. Ron DeSantis’s Response To Surfside Collapse

Washington Post reporter Hannah Dreier published a series of misleading tweets over the weekend accusing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis of fumbling the state’s response to the recent building collapse in the town of Surfside.

On Saturday, Dreier posted a screenshot of FEMA’s response to the recent building collapse, claiming that it took DeSantis a full 24 hours to approve any form of emergency assistance for the affected area.

“There’s a saying in emergency management: The first 24 hours are the only 24 hours,” Dreier stated. “FEMA was ready to deploy to the condo collapse almost immediately, and included the crisis in its daily briefing, but didn’t get permission from Gov. DeSantis to get on the ground for a full day.”

According to FEMA’s National Incident Management System, requests for emergency assistance are to be made by local officials to state officials, who then contact federal officials for assistance.

On Sunday, DeSantis Press Secretary Christina Pushaw took to Twitter to respond to the accusations, stating that Dreier left out critical information from her tweets. Moreover, Pushaw added that Dreier did not make an attempt to contact her or DeSantis for comment on the matter.

“This is missing important context, @hannahdreier never asked me for comment,” said Pushaw. “emergency response started within minutes of the disaster led by Miami Dade County, amazing first responders. county mayor signed local emergency [delclaration] 4:40 & @GovRonDeSantis signed eo less than 1hr later.”

In a tweet that followed, Pushaw posted the official emergency declaration signed by Miami Dade County Mayor Danielle Levine Cava. Time-stamped at 4:33 p.m. ET on June 24, the declaration was signed more than 12 hours after the initial collapse of the building. Less than an hour later, DeSantis signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency for Miami Dade at 5:32 p.m. ET.

When asked by NBC’s Chuck Todd about the state’s response to the disaster, Cava, a Democrat, took the time to dismiss claims that her city has had any problems in acquiring emergency assistance.

“We are very grateful, not only the state of Florida has been here in force […] we’ve not lacked for any support,” she said.

Recent statements from the White House also invalidate Drier’s claims, with a call readout between President Joe Biden and DeSantis making clear that FEMA had been in close contact with Florida officials since the building’s collapse.

“The White House and FEMA have been in close coordination with local officials throughout the past two days,” the June 25 statement read. “The White House is continuing to monitor the situation, and the President will continue to receive regular updates from his Homeland Security team.”

Drier has yet to issue a correction on the matter.

Look, we all know that President Trump would have had the cranes and machinery there in a couple of hours and would have personally overseen the rescue and recovery and demanding updates. He’d have been on the phone wanting to know how soon the cranes could arrive. Need to clear a freeway to expedite them getting there? Done! Need to ram the paperwork through FEMA or whoever? Done!

DeSantis is doing the best he can, given the circumstances.

So, what has the drooling Supreme Socialist Leader Biden been doing? What does it matter if his handlers give him periodic updates?

I forget - who owns the record for the most retractions, revisions, and/or recantations of their stories, the NYT, Wapo, or CNN?

Lol

Is FEMA really necessary in a case like this? A state can’t handle it? I’m open to being educated on this topic but I thought FEMA was for widespread disasters like earthquakes and tornadoes.

Desantis did fine so far. The local fire and rescue people are moving with the blazing speed of an archeological excavation of a ruin.
If this happened in Mexico city, it would have looked like an anthill getting that rubble removed, by hand where necessary.
Yeah, you might hurt someone who survived. But this glacial pace ensures all survivors will die before anyone reaches them.

But all of the tents are set up, incident command staff slots are all filled, the families will have a designated gathering area a half a mile away somewhere...etc etc.

Everything except actual work on the rubble.

“Operation Mockingbird” The new and improved version. The original version placed CIA operatives into news rooms in the early 60’s. The new version just removed the middleman. They just write the content directly now.

4:30 PM, on a Thursday afternoon on before the start of the busiest vaction week of the year. They are lucky they found staff to DO this that quickly.

Having worked in the business (Emergency Management) I appreciate being at a gathering with a mix of work people...and seeing the “texts come in.” Even on a good day, calling in people is at LEAST half an hour—and then you need to make sure the people that are coming in “know the drill.”

I imagine in South Florida they do this so often with weather issues that the process is about as “oiled” as anywhere except Tornado Alley.

FEMA would be the point of contact for national teams and foreign experts such as the Israeli team that is there.

Also FEMA manages the database of certifications in case they need “those 10 guys who are certified to do XYZ.”

The whole system, their interactions, reportings, and training are amazing. People think if FEMA as the guys in the polo shirts who “show up” and hand stuff out. That is a very, very small part of their responsibilities.

So if local and state officials fail to summon Biden’s incompetent federal bureaucracy to an incident confined to a one block area then that’s bad... Any port in a storm I guess.

See my 15.

Emergency Response is broken down like this (In MA for example):

1. City/Town Emergency Management (usually attached to the FD)
2. Regional State Emergency Management. State have different zones.
3. The Umbrella State Emergency Management system which is connected to the Governors office.
4. The Feds, through FEMA.

Most “emergencies” that people never hear of are handled locally. This includes big fires (mutual aid stuff), haz mat spills, tornadoes, blizzards, etc.

The BIG stuff is coordinated locally through BIG EM Departments, or regional staff and FEMA deals through the state to the locals.

A lot of the Criticisms happens when something big happens where it shouldn’t—a big hurricane in New England for example. Pre positioned supplies take extra time.

Of course, when disasters happen on an island supply chain stuff delays reaction. Fema doesn’t have heavy lift and artificial harbor capabilities.

The last, biggest reason for poor local performance is lack of prep or pre-positioning on the locals levels. Budgets for communities eat into supplies and when stuff happens, your suppplies are expired or cannibalized.

The best example of this was the lack of PPE during COVID. Each hopspital is supposed to have 30 days supply in their warehouse for a pandemic/epidemic. The problem is most administrators dip into their stash during the annual “flu epidemic” and then plan to restore the warehouse. This allows them to eat their inventory for the end of the year quarter—and make up for it next year. Except this year they had eaten the inventory—and got shocked with the double whammy of going low on inventory, a delay in ordering, and then the shock of the supply chain.

The shortages would have happened—but about a month later after US plants were gearing up.

FEMA and Emergency Management can only do so much. Ignorant, Stupid, or criminally negligent local staff can cause a lot of issues—as we saw in PR.

Hannah Dreier is a propagandist who works for the #FakeNews domestic enemy the Washington Post.

Nothing they publish has much chance of being true.
