In fact, that's happening regularly around the world. That's how the emergence of new variants is discovered and how the frequency of each variant in each region is tracked. Samples of the virus get taken and genetically sequenced. That's how you know whether it's a UK SARS-CoV-2 virion versus an India or a Brazil variant.
