A 77-year-old man was pushing a bicycle on Interstate 14 in Killeen Friday morning when he was hit and killed by several vehicles, according to police.

Some cars that hit him didn’t even stop, police said.

“Several vehicles that struck the male did not stop and the Traffic Unit would like to speak with the operators of those vehicles, or any other witnesses, about the accident,” the Killeen Police Department said in a news release.

Police have not named the man, pending notification of next of kin.

He was pushing the purple, BMX-style bicycle shortly before 7 a.m. when he was struck by multiple vehicles in the center, westbound lane of I-14 near Rosewood Drive, police said.

This is from last year, and, yes, I'm well aware that the victim shouldn't have been walking down the middle of the interstate, but this story still does provide a cautionary tale against excessive speeding and other reckless forms of driving.

I hope the hit-and-runners are enjoying the hospitality of the state of Texas in 6 x 9 cells, too.

Just a quick point to everyone: It would be helpful if in the title of the thread you would mention the name of state to provide the reader with a quick frame of reference. Many thanks & Cheers!

Is there a Killeen in any other state besides Texas?

I’m a road geek, among other things, and was searching news about I-14 and this article came up.

No, but if you never heard of Killeen (or I-14), you still wouldn't know where the story took place.

According to geotargit.com:

There are 5 places named Killeen in Ireland.
There is one place named Killeen in America.

So you are correct, but this practice would be helpful for a city or town named, say, "Washington" (there are 88 such places in the U.S.)

Cheers!

There’s this thing called a “link.” It’s usually highlighted in red and underlined. You click on it and you can go to the article and find out what state the city is in, among other details.

Yikes! I’ve cycled that stretch of highway. However, when I did so it had not yet been designated an interstate so was legal to ride my bike.

When I saw the headline, my first thought was that this was a story from Ireland (seriously).

I agree. Altho Killeen may not be one of them, every state has some duplicate cities/town names. Not unreasonable to add that in.

Please and Thank You!

Not everyone lives in Texas. Just adding TX behind the name would have provided all the hint interested readers would need.

There's this other thing, called "putting the name of the state in brackets or parentheses" so that the folks reading the article don't have to go to a separate link, which is part of the reason why people go to FR in the first place. Also, MANY local newspapers bury the location, forcing you do look up the weather or advertisements to get a place name.
