It’s possible to game some match-up systems by taking a lose early if a first round loss doesn’t take you out of contention.

They're still in it. That loss hurts though. They play a sort of round robin where w/l and goal differential gets factored in to who advances to a subsequent round. I don't know all the details of how it's set up. But a first game loss doesn't knock you out. Losing by 3 goals is pretty damaging though.

I’m not watching the Olympics, and I want the USA to win as many medals as we can. But when we as a society worry too much about appearances of virtue and less about productivity and excellence, then we are already way over the hump and sliding down the backside. Keep your eye on the ball, people.
