We built some pits like this in the 70s on our farm.
I climbed down in one a couple of times .
Had no idea back then of this danger .
I also sprayed the same mix that was Agent Orange in our pasture as a kid!
Again we had no idea at the time of any danger .
However I think the stuff used in Vietnam was manufactured poorly which is what made it hazardous .
Amazing I’m still around !
I worked a Medico on board a freighter who had one crewman asphyxiated down in a hold, another went down to see what was going on and he died as well. The hold contained cedar chips.
Being a farm kid, I get what they were trying to do.
Dad once climbed into a similar pit, with 12 year old me as hole watch. He had a respirator, but not supplied air.
After I grew up and he started working in tow, we both realize how lucky we were.
It isn’t that simple.
To make saleable compost takes a lot of room, time, and permits.
Three years is what I remember, to go from “fresh” to “ready to sell”.
Big issue is containment. Poop, to be blunt, is water soluble.

And the correct Meters to Monitor All the different gasses and an O2 meter. And a Vent Fan/Hose to blow fresh air into the Confined Space. As well there should be a Safety Monitor and Rescue/Extraction crew and Equipment (Tripod Hoist and Emergency Medical grade Oxygen Tank and Mask.)
Oxygen is naturally present at a concentration of 21% in the air we breathe. The health effects described in this Fact Sheet may occur when breathing pure Oxygen or concentrations greater than 40%. * OSHA defines an Oxygen-deficient atmosphere as having less than 19.5% Oxygen by volume. * Always monitor Oxygen levels before entering any Confined Space.
AND THE PERSONALL ON SITE THAT KNOW HOW TO USE IT ALL !!!
Rescue and Ambulance crews no matter how fast may not arrive in time.
Face Mask Filters can filter certain odors and gases BUT if there is NO O2 in the air it won't matter shat filters you have.
There was a story a few of 3 people walking into a silo full of nitrogen air and passed out 10 feet in.
never seen a pit wi any of that...
That would do it!
Often the intended rescuer also succumbs.
I just stood near a manure pit on an Irish farm once and it was stomach churning. 😉
G-d bless you and your family. My brother died tragically 20 years ago this month and left behind a 3 month old daughter who is now a 20 year old junior in college. The pain never leaves you and it’s never been the same since.
This is obviously the liquid stuff. They dump this on fields around homes. It smells nasty. It also gets in the ground water and contaminates it. If they were still doing it the old fashioned way then these guys would all still be alive.
Oh, and sorry you don't like my methods of relaxation. I now know not to invite you to my next party.

They probably died due to Hypoxia.Our bodies require at least 18% oxygen to maintain consciousness .When I dive below 200 ft. I use Hypoxic trimix 15/50.This mixture is not safe to breathe at the surface so I breathe off my deco gas until I drop below 20 ft where the PPO2 of the 15/50 is high enough to safely breathe it.In the confined space of that manure pit they were probably only conscious for less than a minute.Sad.
what a shitty way to go.
I remember a similar incident decades ago in which a man went into an enclosed and passed out. Fire and rescue were called. The first rescue man went in without an air supply and died.
Another went in WITH an air supply. Seeing what had happened he lifted his mask to yell instructions to those outside the hole, and he also died.
I worked for a chicken hatchery and when we put baby chicks in a chicken house without cleaning it out, the ammonia smell would knock our socks off!
Another bullshit story.
