Return to office?! HE** NO!

What if a large employer with oh, say 25,000+ Global Employees sent a poll out asking who wants to return to office in September?

And what if that poll included a statement that said anyone wanting to return to office would be required to sign a waiver, stating if they contract the China Virus they cannot hold the company responsible?

How many people would say "Yes! I want to return to office in September?"

More specifically, how many of those Global Employees, of which approximately 10,000 are Chicago based would say "Yes?"

As it turns out, here in the Chicago area that number is exactly ... ZERO.

Not necessarily because of the China Virus and to some degree, not because of the waiver.

It's the VIOLENCE, stupid!

None of us want to go back to CHICAGO because of the violence. Not just the murder rate, the VIOLENCE. The under-reported/un-reported muggings, beatings, robberies and more that happen inside the "loop" known as the Downtown Chicago business district.

So who in HR & Legal thought this "poll" was a good idea, and are they going to re-issue the poll for cold and flu season?

I mean c'mon --- if the company doesn't want to be held liable for someone contracting the China Virus, which has a 99.99625% or better rate of survival then why not require a waiver for colds? Flu? Allergy season?

Why not? If we can use that to stay away from the office to avoid illness, why can't we vote to continue working from home because we don't want to risk subjecting ourselves to the lawlessness of Shitcago?

Am I right, or am I right?

BTW: YES, My employer DID poll us on return to office in September and YES, the majority of us are saying NO because of the unchecked violence in Chicago and CPD being prevented from doing their jobs by the liberal lesbian licker, Lori Lightfoot!

93% of my organization did NOT want to return to the office with a pre-pandemic frequency (5 days a week)... only 20% wanted to return at any degree at all.. (1-3 days a week)

How many floors of downtown office space does that employer occupy? You might suggest that your employer sub-let the space to allow illegal aliens to offset the cost, which could reduce the pressure to put employees in that space.

Why would anyone want to return at all: free rent, extra money from DC and wage continuation. No commuting expense or worries or loss of free time.

I like your idea but federally speaking we don’t have to pay rent any more

So if the employer added a reminder that “home” could be anywhere in the world, I suspect that would change a few minds. Bangalore is nice this time of year.

We’ve had a our office open for a long time now on a “voluntary” basis. We are using this period to determine who really values their employment with us. It has been eye opening to say the least. For the first time in my management career I am actually looking forward to cutting some people soon.

Of those polled how many:

Voted for Lightfoot?

Didn’t vote for Lightfoot but for darned sure have never voted for any Republican?

Hate Donald J Trump?

Hate Republicans just because they’re Republicans, except Kinzinger of course?

Voted for CornPop?

Are Democrats to the core and their voting patterns have caused what they’re all afraid of?

Some trucking companies (& I think the numbers will grow) are saying they will not send their trucks to cities with “defund the police” policies as they are concerned for the safety of their drivers. This could get “interesting” .... hell hole cities are going to start looking even more like something out of a dystopian movie.

PS - it doesn’t help if your mayor looks like something out of a Walking Dead movie & has a brain to match.

Pick random Asian cities such as Tokyo, Singapore and Taipei and the downtown central business districts are some of the nicest and most attractive places to work. I've been to all three. Even Seoul and Bangkok aren't that bad.

Take away the liberal lunatic ruling class and there is no reason why big American cities couldn't be decent like the aforementioned Asian counterparts.

Yep, in my case we are supposed to return to the office full time after Labor Day. I just may not even show up at all. Various excuses will ensue until management gets around to firing me. Probably take a month or two. Not to worry, I've got enough money to retire ;-)

If you can do the job from home, it’s the GREEN thing to do.
Save gasoline, reduces pollution.
Saves commute time and commute stress for employees.
Provides healthier/cheaper eating options at home.

And Yes, in a place like Chicago, reduces crime, by reducing the number of victims available.

“Pick random Asian cities such as Tokyo, Singapore and Taipei “

To really drive the point home: Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai are nice places to live and work other than the air pollution.

Why isn’t Congress passing CoupFlu liability protection for all Americans biz?

Why isn’t American biz screaming for it?

Doesn’t American biz deserve the same protection Big Pharma and certain public employees get...?

Correct. If you can get past the air pollution and slight sewer smell, any of the aforementioned cities is still way better than their American counterparts. Plus, with the possible exception of Hong Kong, these are still on the lower end of Asian cities east of the Bay of Bengal that one would most like to visit.

WOW. That is an interesting perspective. Are you saying that a person's work ethic and productivity do not count as much as "butts in seats"?
I've been working remote since March 2020 and worked remote on many projects since 1992 (before public internet). My work productivity and output were all that I have been judged on. If a person't productivity is not where it should be then that person should be spoken to individually and not paint all employees with the broad stroke "who values employment with us". Every team I've worked on is MORE productive (by 30-100%) working remote. We typically work longer hours and are always available.
Of course there will be individuals who do not have the discipline to work without direct supervision. Those people should be dealt with individually.

My office in NH has been opened since March 1st.
We recently let a woman go because she did not want to come back to the office. She was not getting her job done at home. She has three kids to watch. She posted a lot on Facebook all the things she was doing with her kids. Good for her. Now, she is unemployed. She had worked here for 10 years.

We have hired two other office staff people in the last year.

There is another woman that is on leave because her daughter has a drug problem. Prior to that her dad was dying. She has been in the office about 10 days in the last year.

There are just some people that will take advantage of a situation if they can.

My company was work from home since April of 2020. In my case it saved me a 3 hour commute and $750 a month in commuter costs. Therefore it was a bit difficult for me to retire a month ago (but it was well worth it). However, I went to someone else’s retirement party a week ago and the consensus of those I talked to was this: If they require us to go back into the office I’m looking for another job.

Sadly, as much as I loved “working from home”, meetings were pretty worthless.

I don’t know where we go from here. Probably total economic collapse, especially when you factor in the collapse of our government right now. I’m a little concerned the world is at a Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassination’s moment.

My company in the 80s used half of the ATT building kitty corner from the sears tower. Then it came time to move in the 90s, and they decided to purchase a whole smaller building down the road instead but instead of moving somewhere that sucks less than chicago (literally anywhere), they bought a building a few blocks down because the bigwigs thought downtown chicago was so sexy or something and the serfs would gladly spend two hours a day every day riding a train to and from the city in perpetuity. Over the years cut backs (especially in useless IT where we cut 1000 people and literally nobody noticed). As more and more accounting tasks were automated, there was more and more attrition. And more and more entire floors were shut down. Then covid happened and now we have 18 floors of ghost town. I doubt that building will ever be occupied again. It is amazing. Up to the early 90s, a suit and tie was mandatory. Then casual fridays came. Then it transitioned to business casual for men, to even jeans are ok today. May as well be on different planets
