Kansas Math Teacher Resigns Over CRT Training And Renewed Mask Mandates, Gets Fined

A Kansas elementary school teacher resigned from his job following a mask requirement for unvaccinated teachers, coupled with its recent critical race theory push, and was subsequently fined by the district.

"That was my final straw," Josiah Enyart said, referring to the Shawnee Mission School District sending an email renewing its mask mandate for all students and unvaccinated teachers on July 25.

When the 6th grade math teacher resigned from Comanche Elementary School in Overland Park, however, the district told him he’d have to pay a $1,000 "liquidation penalty" for resigning after a specific deadline in his contract.

"I will be bringing my stuff, but I don’t plan on bringing a check," Enyart told the Sentinel, a local nonprofit news outlet.

Enyart resigned just days after the masks requirements were announced, but his frustrations with the school had been building for a few years. In 2014, the school announced a $20 million technology update that gave every student Ipads or Macbooks, which had Enyart questioning, "Why do we need all of this?"

The SMSD use to be the premiere of school districts in Johnson County. Now that JoCo has turned blue, it’s going to hell. You get what you vote for, folks.

That's the way to do it. The FedMob can access your bank account and remove funds from it but the school board can't.

Because someone, somewhere, is getting paid off.

I’m sure the Teacher’s Union will protect him, really I am.

No but if it’s in his contract, they can take him to court and if they win, he gets to pay the $1000 plus the school board’s legal expenses.

Seriously, it sounds like he is resigning due to the mask mandate, and just throwing CRT in as an afterthought.

And I don’t understand his objection to tech. I’m of the opinion most schools should be using more tech.

I'm not a mind reader so I wouldn't know about that.

The way the article reads, the Mask Mandate just occurred, the push for CRT was earlier. Unless I read it wrong. The Mask mandate was the straw that broke the camel’s back. He didn’t resign when CRT was pushed.

he shouldn’t have resigned. he should have let them “fire” him (i.e., suspend, layoff, whatever). btw, why didn’t he go to the teacher’s union.

I wonder if a mask mandate is mention in his contract.

Probably not, and that might be a legal out for him.

The mask mandate does change the condition of employment.

If not, he may have a breach of contract defense.

I don't think he's objecting to tech, he's objecting to the local landowners buying every kid in school an ipad or laptop.

I would disagree. There is a time and a place for tech, when students have a grasp of fundamentals. The problem is tech is being used to replace actual instruction.

Getting fined for resigning from a job converts the job from a voluntary exchange of goods and services into involuntary servitude—and is thus a clear and direct violation of the 13th Amendment.
