‘Airplane!’ creator slams joy-killing threat: ‘Twitter 9 percent’

Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the release of “Airplane!,” the comedy I wrote and directed with my brother Jerry and our friend Jim Abrahams. Just before the world shut down, Paramount held a screening at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, followed by a Q&A in which an audience member asked a question we never used to receive: “Could you make ‘Airplane!’ today?”

My response: “Of course, we could. Just without the jokes.”

Although people tell me that they love “Airplane!” and it seems to be included on just about every Top Five movie-comedy list, there was talk at Paramount of withholding the rerelease over feared backlash for scenes that today would be deemed “insensitive.”

One of my favorite movies is Blazing Saddles, a movie universally characterized by Leftists as “racist”.

The movie was made by Mel Brooks precisely in the way it was to poke fun at racism and racists. It isn’t surprising that they don’t have the intelligence to see that.

And I absolutely love the “Airplane!” movie.

If you heard it on Sirius the entire Verse where the word Faggot was used has been edited out. It happened over a year ago, if not earlier than that.

I have Sirius as well and noticed it the first time I heard the censored version.

I'm 55 and I'm glad I lived in the freest time I can think of, the 1970's and 1980's, you could make movies without some CRT Karen jumpin' down your throat. It seems like the whole world is becoming like the strict town from "Footloose." (1984)

A side note, I'm a cat owner too, I have a 14 year old male grey and white name Rascal. I almost lost him last week, he had trouble breathing and rushed him to the vets. He has a hyperthyroid and also because of it, heart failure and fluid in the chest. He's on 5 meds now but is doing a lot better, even the vet thought he would not be here next week. He's back to eating like a pig, running about and almost back to his normal self, albeit still a little weak. He has permanent damage to the heart but hopefully the meds will keep him going for a while. Close call.

If killing the 9-percenters would also eliminate those who drive in the left lane at 10 mph under the speed limit, David Zucker might be on to something.

The casting of Barbara Billingsley (aka June Cleaver) as the Jive Lady was sheer genius, but her performance in that minor role demonstrated once again that the consummate acting professional can steal any scene simply by being in it.
