3K years ago, human brains were that large, with heads big enough to accomodate them? 3K years is not really that long, anthropologically speaking.
Were the typical heights different than now?
I always thought average people were slightly shorter then than now, perhaps only 5ft 7’ tops for the men.

So how could a man only 5ft 7’ support a head the size of a
Georgia Watermelon? Bobble-headed Barbarians?

Here's one: Because you'll never find enough fossils of human beings to give you an accurate estimate of a trait of the whole population at a given time--never mind the wild variance in skull and brain size among human populations generally.

But apparently this was worth a grant somewhere.

And you are feeding yourself with crap like grains instead of the fats from animals that grew our brains in the first place.

In another 2000 years they will be saying the same thing...
The shrunk brain will have shrunk further and be referred to as the pea-brain......

“this decrease was due to increased reliance on collective intelligence”

Explains the small brains of democrats.

This means that within a social group where knowledge is shared or individuals are specialists at certain tasks, brains may adapt to become more efficient, such as decreasing in size.

So the big brained ancestors were smarter and more intelligent?

BEER?.............................

Close. I suggest grains and other carbs derived from agriculture and the safer, more sedentary living that came with agriculture. There is evidence that pre-agricultural humans didn't just eat meat when available, but were hypercarnivores deriving almost all of their calories from meat.

Civilization and the attendant agriculture brought a primarily grain-based diet to humans who earlier lived off a varied diet that included a lot of animal protein and better nutritional balance. Hard to imagine that would not have impacted intellectual development. After all wolves are quite a bit smarter than domesticated dogs on average.

Much depends on the diet.

Both Euorpeans and Japanese have gotten much bigger when their diet was improved to include more protein and fat, especially when young.

It is one of the reasons nobility were often larger than the peasants. They simply had a better diet.

Dave Wright post #20. You just laid out the framework for a great premise for a science fiction movie. All you need is Buck Rodgers or Sly Stallone to show up and shake up the paradigm.

Woke, from nearly 40 years ago. Of course, now it would be canceled for heritage theft or whatever. Sounds like the songwriter(s?) had just watched "Little Big Man".
