Each state’s favorite Thanksgiving sides, presented just in time to argue at the table
the take out ^

Posted on 11/04/2021 6:25:22 AM PDT by mylife

The map of favorite Thanksgiving sides, provided by Zippia, is surprisingly varied.

Okay, get your arguin’ pants on, everybody, because we’ve got a Thanksgiving map for you. This one features America’s favorite Thanksgiving sides by state. It’s provided by Zippia, a career resource site which used Google Trends to determine each state’s most-searched side.

The Zippia team based its data on a pre-determined list of classic Thanksgiving side dishes, and they did make some calls that you might consider controversial—for example, labeling gravy a side, because it’s not a main dish (nor a drink, as they joked). The team also analyzed search trends from November of last year, so if any big changes happen in 2021, we won’t know until later.

Keeping those things in mind, here’s the skinny. The top pick? A classic: mashed potatoes. Nine states have crowned mashed potatoes the cream of the Thanksgiving crop: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois (The Takeout’s home state), Massachusetts, Nevada, and Oregon.

Other states chose more non-traditional sides: for example, Alaska’s pick of stuffed mushrooms, Delaware’s choice of mashed cauliflower potatoes, Kentucky’s and Tennessee’s hashbrown casserole, and Minnesota and Missouri’s pick of a charcuterie tray.

I like mashed potatoes, but don’t eat them for Thanksgiving because they just take up room on the plate (and in my stomach) where I can put something I only get at holiday time. I also don’t eat rolls, unless they’re something really special, for the same reason.

We have them with cinnamon and butter. And, in my case, a wee bit of brown sugar.

The marshmallow thing just sounds icky to me.

But à chacun son goût.

How did Cranberries ever get into this feast? Yuk.

Best side...stuffing.

One of the best sides I ever had was baby peas with artichoke hearts. The chances the Pilgrims had that?? LOL

Yes, sweet potatoes mashed with orange juice and butter, smooshed into a casserole dish, topped with marshmallows, and put into the oven until the marshmallows brown. I’m not a huge fan but it’s Mr. Mercat’s favorite. Also, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, stuffing although I don’t use it to stuff the turkey, and my favorite, giblet gravy. Also of course, cranberry sauce and celery. That reminds me… I need to ask the guy who is slaughtering our turkey this weekend to save me some giblets.

I have a lovely stand of young tender collards in my fall garden that are going on the Thanksgiving table and likely Christmas also.

Many might say sweet potatoes, it my family it typically was special cranberry and nut concoction. For me, the veggie of choice is the brussel sprouts, best if in a tasty casserole.

Agree. They're gross. Looks like a seagull pooped in the dish. I always pass on that.

Last year, a family member made Paula Deen's sweet potatoes, and they had some sort of brown sugar crunchy topping. It was a huge upgrade.

I'm a Southerner, and my family always had cornbread dressing when I was growing up... there are still good-hearted squabbles about which matriarch made the best.

My wife makes her mother's rice dressing (her Mom RIP was Japanese), and I like it, too.
