If you have a smartphone, you probably use its front-facing camera for selfies and the occasional video call. Perhaps, if you’re lucky, you’ll shoot the next viral TikTok masterpiece.
You might use your next smartphone’s front camera for the same things, but there’s a chance that camera won’t completely turn off once you’re done with it.
This week, chipmaker Qualcomm revealed its latest Snapdragon processor, which will power many of the high-end Android smartphones you’ll see in stores in 2022, including models from Motorola, Sony, OnePlus. And a new feature built into that chip could allow smartphone makers to keep those front-facing cameras on all the time in a sort of low-power mode, waiting and watching for a face to appear in front of it.
So why is a company responsible for building the brains of our smartphones trying to make “always-on” cameras a common feature?
“Your phone’s front camera is always securely looking for your face, even if you don’t touch it.”

It’s pretty dark inside my pants pocket.
Jokes on them
It wont be my next smartphone if it does that
I usually carry my cell phone in the crack of my a$$ so my ‘always on’ camera should capture some epic pics.
3G is being phased out, LTE is next in about 10 years, and the iPhone SE is not 5G compatible.
The market will respond with cases that feature a swiveling camera blocker.
Mine's 4G, and fortunately, I'll probably be dead before 5G is here.
Then you're living on borrowed time, because 5G has been here for a while now. Also, 4G = LTE. My iPhone SE 2020 is my transitional phone. I'm waiting for the 5G network to be more robust before I make the switch.
Just put a peice of tape over the lens. Microphones are a bit trickyer.
In more ways than one 😆
I only bought a smart phone, because the 3G phone I had was being interfered with by somebody's network booster in my neighborhood. I had to go to 4G to get the network booster's icon off my screen. I bought an iPhone because I own Apple computers, and got the cheapest one Verizon had. I've hated it from the time I bought it, and only use it for phone calls and occasional text messages. I don't do anything else on it.
So if I see a young lady with a nice Asset, and her phone is in her back pocket with the camera facing out, someone will know I’m checking out her asset?
Just thought of another good use for nail polish.
Odd that that’s something that would be built into the chip.
Get a wallet style case for your phone. Covers camera when closed.
I wondered who was posting all the “epic pics”.
