Indonesia’s parliament has approved a bill to relocate the nation’s capital from Jakarta to a jungled area of Kalimantan on Borneo island, the planning minister said on Tuesday.
The new state capital law, which provides a legal framework for President Joko Widodo’s ambitious $32 billion mega project, stipulates how development of the capital will be funded and governed.
The new center will be called “Nusantara”, a Javanese name for the Indonesian archipelago chosen by the president, Monoarfa announced on Monday.
Plans to relocate the government from Jakarta, a bustling megacity of 10 million people that suffers from chronic congestion, floods and air pollution, have been floated by multiple presidents, but none have made it this far.

My thought too. How would our government and political system change if the capital were moved to, say, Omaha or Salina? Of course we know what would happen to the abandoned D.C. . . .
However, I'm sure the other nasty part of Jakarta, the top to bottom corruption needed to do business (I always assigned the market to our Singapore partners since they could deal with it once removed) in Indonesia will transfer completely intact to the new capital.

I think the people in Alaska once voted to move their state capital from Juneau to a place north of Anchorage (I think it was Talkeetna) but somehow that never materialized. Juneau is hard to get to from the rest of the state.
Brazil's Brasilia made sense, of a sort - Rio doesn't need to be the capitol to be Rio.
Jakarta will go the way of Calcutta.
We need to relocate our capital to a more centrally located part of the country.
We need to do that in America again.
Plenty of countries have changed their capitals at some time in their history including Nigeria changing capitals from the crime infested Logos to brand new capital Abuja some years back.
That way, when it flips, the Dims can flip it right back?
And escape the very high crime, super corrupt DC.

You think for a microsecond that geography would make a difference? The problem is the snake, not the geography, and the snake would just relocate to the new place.

This is probably going to pass, because of the Tonga volcanic eruption and memories of the Boxing Day tsunami. Sez here, third largest island in the world, largest island in Asia (hard to have an island be part of a continent, but anyway), and the territory is shared with Malaysia and the Kdm of Brunei. I suspect the avg elevation offers some feeling of protection against tsunamis.

Jakarta lies on a low, flat alluvial plain with historically extensive swampy areas; the parts of the city farther inland are slightly higher. It is easily flooded during the rainy season. The draining of swamps for building purposes and the continuous decrease of upland forest vegetation have increased the danger of floods. With such an excess of water in the soil, Jakarta has a shortage of clean drinking water, for which there is increasing demand. The area is quite fertile for fruit and other horticulture, as most of the soil is of old volcanic origin.
Yes, JKT is a sh*thole. I always tried to spend as little time there as possible.
