How to Mess Up a 5G Rollout
WSJ ^ | 18 Jan 2022 | Editorial Board

We’re from the FAA and we’re here to blame you for our mistakes.

It’s hard to know which is more messed up these days—air transportation, or the Biden Administration. As another case in point, consider the clash between airlines and wireless carriers over 5G.

Carriers paid the U.S. government $80 billion for this valuable spectrum, but the Federal Aviation Administration now won’t let them use it. The agency says the signals could potentially interfere with plane altimeters that measure the distance to the ground.

The Federal Communications Commission reviewed these concerns during notice-and-comment on its plan to repurpose C-band from satellite operators. In March 2020, it approved a 258-page decision that included a safe buffer between the bands occupied by altimeters and 5G—larger than many other countries require.

Yet some 20 months later, the FAA demanded to relitigate the FCC decision and took airlines and carriers hostage That’s far too charitable to the FAA and Transportation Department. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg rolled FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel, who has supported the carriers’ 5G rollout behind the scenes. And now he and Mr. Biden are portraying their blundering as a diplomatic victory. This Administration needs less political spin and more competent governance.

#1 reply at WSJ: In Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg's defense, he is likely exhausted after being called back to Washington, after (only) two months of paternity leave. Wears me out just thinking about it

“This Administration needs less political spin and more competent governance.”

Yeah. And unicorns are possible.

How long before we see class action suits against the cell outfits. “You sold me a 5G that doesn’t work.”

Everything the govt touches turns to s!!t

What is the best way to get around the paywall at the WSJ so we can read the rest of the story?

Geez. It’s almost like there’s a breakdown in interagency(FCC-FAA) communications huh? The rollout of the, uh, you know, the thing should NOT have been a surprise to anyone.

5G has been in development for over 10 years.
The FAA just figured this out?

Only the FCC and airline manufacturers are at fault here, not the airlines or the cell phone providers.

Airliner altimeters were meant to be built to use frequencies we'll call X. Spectrum was sold in frequencies we'll call Y to cell phone providers. Airline manufacturers built the plans to use X + Y when they were only supposed to use X.

The FCC should force the Airliner manufacturers to fix their aircraft.

Oh and one more thing...
5G is fulling designed, up and running.
To change it would require at least another 5 years if not more.

This is all about giving 5G to China and has nothing to do with airlines.

This, plus the ports debacle, should sink any chance that Buttigieg has at the White House.

Perhaps, he is being setup as the fall guy to clear the path for someone else. But I really don’t care as long as another communist is marked as incompetent.

Yes, I know that incompetence is a badge of honor among Democrats.

Try Outline.com.

It works on some but not all paywalls, depends on the sophistication of the poster.

The FCC is a liberal political animal. They are blaming the FAA, yet, it is the FCC who is responsible for ensuring proper use of the RF frequency spectrum, not the FAA. The FCC screwed the pooch and tried to blame the airlines, and that failed, so they are now blaming the FAA. Typical liberals, never taking responsibility for their own actions.

I simply cannot believe that this is still an issue as both the FCC and FAA have had years to figure it out and, in my understanding, there is a considerable frequency gap between the 5G signals and the aircraft instruments.

Did no one setup a test airport and run flight tests? I would guess the FCC expected the FAA to do so and vice versa, so it was not done. And the airlines do not want to bear the expense of testing their own equipment and swapping it out for new if the existing modules are susceptible to noise.

Great example of government that is ever more expensive, intrusive and incompetent at the same time.

This might be a LONGSHOT?

Sometimes works!!!???

First, clear your head of negativity; not easy.

Relax, enjoy your surroundings...

Carefully parse the third line of the first reply.

Works for me?

Yep. I think of this every time I’m on an airplane and I’m told to put my phone in ‘airplane mode’. Screw that. We have the FCC, which has ONLY ONE LEGITIMATE JOB, which is to make sure that my phone doesn’t operate on frequencies it shouldn’t. None of this should be an issue. And if itis, the agency in charge should be disbanded, the employees blacklisted from ever holding a government position again, and a new agency should be formed to handle the situation properly.

So simple even a troglodyte can occasionally pass the test!

Also, see reply #13.

With proper mindfulness and some luck...

That and, there are extremely few leaders in our government; they are all followers.

They simply follow the greens, burnie, AOC...

Just think of all the possible carbon/ water vapor emissions prevented with airlines shutdown!

Almost nobody cares about this issue…..and Biden will use 20 minutes of his press conference this afternoon wasting time discussing it. This way he can minimize the other problems in this country.
