Pill Could Stop Sex-Addicted Men From Cheating, Claim Scientists

A pill that could stop men from cheating could "potentially" soon be in the pipeline, following a new study by scientists.

The study, published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, found that men with “hypersexual disorder” have “significantly higher” levels of oxytocin in their system.

Oxytocin — often referred to as the “love hormone” — is produced by both men and women and helps fuel positive emotions, like other hormones such as dopamine and serotonin.

It's also responsible for increasing levels of relaxation and trust.

However, the study - which examined 64 men with hypersexual disorder, and 38 men with "ordinary levels of sexual interest and arousal" - found that too much of the hormone could be a bad thing.

Researchers found “significant positive correlations between oxytocin levels and the rating scales measuring hypersexual behaviour”.

“Oxytocin plays an important role in sex addiction and may be a potential drug target for future pharmacological treatment,” co-author Dr Andreas Chatzittofis told Newswise.

In addition, the levels of oxytocin in the men with hypersexual disorder significantly reduced after they underwent cognitive behavioural therapy.

This appears to confirm that sex addiction can also be successfully treated without the use of pharmaceuticals.

While sex addiction isn't recognised as a mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association, compulsive sex behaviour was included in the World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Diseases list for the first time in 2018.

They described compulsive sexual behaviour disorder as a “persistent pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges resulting in a repetitive sexual behaviour".

Interesting how they don’t mention the main sex hormone, Testosterone. Sex addiction is BS. It’s just a matter of Testosterone levels and not being able to keep it your pants. That is a conscience decision.

It sounds like they are talking about compulsive behavior. All men have testosterone, but not all men act out in that manner.

I am aware that I am mixing two very different topics (contraception and sexual desire) but it seems to me that society changed very much when the Pill came along and made it easier to avoid consequences of sexual activity. If another medicine came along and removed sexual desire from Men, I think a lot — a lot — of men would take that pill. Better grades in school, better success in the workforce, more money staying in your pocket after you earn it.

As with the women’s Pill, I think it might have a bad effect on society, but I think a lot of people wouldn’t care about that and would take the new pill so that they just didn’t have the distraction of sex. I mean: it’s fun, but it’s not always fun. There is a downside to desire and I think many would be happy to be free of it.

This article seems to about men with a serious sex addiction. But that doesn’t have to be the only market.

testosterone increases propensity for aggression, IE pursuit, moreso than the reward. I tend to agree more with the article, at least in theory. Test affects the before, oxytocin the after. The highest levels of Oxytocin experienced by any are post partum women. It’s not strictly a reward or feel-good hormone in the dopamine sense, but more generally bonding and belonging and sense of well-being. I didn’t read how they affect the pathway though. Seems like a dangerous thing to tamper with. Could be abused

I used to administer oxytocin to livestock mothers who rejected calves, lambs, or fought grafting a replacement onto them if I needed a mother. It's so powerful I had one cow who included the 55 gallon garbage barrel as her offspring. That is the ultimate explanation for the mothering instinct. I can say that with full first hand experience.

The thought of giving that to males seems like it could really mess up your head?!

I can just see if now and underground illegal drug network of middle aged women buying this pill to slip into their husband's morning coffee.

“.......“significant positive correlations between oxytocin levels and .... hypersexual behaviour”........” As just about everyone in a hard science knows correlation is not causation.

My favorite such example was a study of juvenile delinquents which correlated them as drinking more milk. That is, milk drinking correlated to more violent juvenile delinquency. Someone pointed out that in the sample, bigger and stronger kids tended to have better nutrition and kids who were bigger and stronger could succeed at being more violent. Which doesn't mean we should deny protein, vitamins and minerals to all children to prevent them from being violent.

I asked my wife what she wanted to do for our anniversary. She said “I want to do something I’ve never done before.” I said , “OK you can clean the house.”
