The Colorado-based alpinist was 400 feet up The Ribbon when an avalanche released. He caught the ensuing moments on video.
This was probably one of the most terrifying experiences I’ve had while solo climbing. Took absolutely every ounce of strength I could muster to keep holding onto my tools.
I knew if I stayed terrified I probably would die, so I concentrated on controlling my breathing, hugging in tight to the wall to prevent snow buildup on my body, and tucked my head down to breathe a little air bubble. There was a wave in there, about 10 seconds after I managed to calm myself down and throw my second tool in the wall, that hit me with a ton of weight. It was immense pressure, and I felt chunks of snow bouncing off my backpack and body. I thought I was going to die. If a wave of any more force hit me, I don’t think I could’ve held on.

He sounds high.
I’m glad he lived. But... put yourself in that situation and you have to be willing to face the risks.
Throwing away your life because you wanted a thrill is the height of selfish stupidity.
*I wonder how this formation was created? I know, let’s climb it to find out.
“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. God Himself is not secure, having given man dominion over His works! Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold. Faith alone defends. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.”
H. Keller; she knew about this stuff!
That’s one reason I live in Florida..............

“He sounds high.”
In my teeshirt collection I have one that says, “I GET HIGH ON ROCK”
—”Throwing away your life because you wanted a thrill is the height of selfish stupidity.”
And as a self-labeled “PARTY ANIMAL”; WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?
“There’s no reward in life without risk.”
—”*I wonder how this formation was created? I know, let’s climb it to find out.”
Sounds better than the old cliche, “BECAUSE IT’S THERE”.
—””That’s one reason I live in Florida....”
If Florida were shaved bald, you could see from one end of the state to the other!
And the alligators, and the snakes and the hurricanes and the frozen iguanas falling on your head...
He cheated death.
I go to parties.
I fell asleep driving across Kansas on I-70.
I woke up in Colorado..................
I’ve been through the ice twice and it was brutal. Had hip.waders on and it filled them with ice cold, water. Very painful. Thanfully,Thankfully, of the times was only chest deep, the other time though my feet didn’t touch bottom, but I was able to grab the edge of the ice and hold, myself from being dunked.
A other time I was gold panning in a partially frozen stream which was about 3 feet deep. I slipped and went down, totally under water. When that water hit my head , wow! Excruciating pain.
I don’t know how the Russians take dips inmthe ice and go totally under. The pain was something I never wanna experienc again.
Those aren’t frozen iguanas, those are turds released from airplanes overhead lol. (Remember the movie,Joe dirt? Foundmthat poo tank and thought it was something g else? Lol)
Good one.
I’ve done some rock climbing...and had my fair share of “sewing machine leg”. Interesting sport, but it scares the crap outta me. LOL.
The guy in the article sure has a tale to tell his grandkids!
Yep, that’s why at age 19, after my first rodeo bull ride, I said never again. I wanted to live and live as healthy a life as possible. Had I have gotten a permanent injury, such as a bad knee, I wouldn’t have been able to run with my kids and grandkids. Had I met my wife in a crippled condition, (neither of us were living for God at the time), she probably wouldn’t have been interested in getting to know me.
Vanity has killed and maimed many.
Many years of rock, ice, skydiving, scuba, motorcycle racing(AMA), LSD...not that crap; long slow distance running…
My friends are mostly the same.
Occasionally called an adrenaline junkie and hated it!
I’ve grown used to it.
Endorphins, I like them; no ethanol or artificial stimulants are needed. From a long line of teetotalers that is a good thing.
Our son is an intense climber, just returned from a long weekend doing ice in Minnesota. Our daughter worked at the top of cell towers for years and was a tower rescue instructor. Our oldest grandchild at age ten was on the ice two weeks back with her parents.
