Why Nixon's Prediction About Putin and Ukraine Matters

Resurfaced footage of a Richard Nixon interview from 1992 has shown the former President making a 'prescient' prediction about the future of Russia.

It comes after Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine and launched a “full-scale invasion” on Wednesday night, with terrifying footage of troops advancing into the country sparking fear across the continent.

Putin claimed he was helping with the "denazification" of Ukraine and said his troops were "peacekeeping", while he also cautioned against interference from other countries, warning them “if you do you will face consequences greater than any of you have faced in history”.

That inadequate commitment could not overcome the profound problems of the new Russia, however. As a result—as Nixon had predicted—a strongman assumed soon power and instituted a familiar authoritarianism at home and an aggressive interventionism

Nixon had an inadequate knowledge of geopolitical history. Russia goes back and forth between anarchy and authoritarianism. Just because the U.S. shoveled money at them, didn't mean they could change who they are. Just like the U.S. couldn't change the fundamental nature of Afghanistan in 20 years.

“I do not want to go back to a cold war with these Russian troglodytes and that is what is really important.”

Putin wants to restart the Soviet Union so his parasitic regime can suck the lifeblood from Eastern Europe again. Not sure how you expect to avoid a new Cold War or even a hot war dealing with someone like that.

By supporting Ukraine and economic sanctions.

Putin wants to restart the Soviet Union

And Biden supports a Neoconservative expansion of liberal democracies. Intervention is at the heart of this expansion, and has been since 1991.

“Whatabouttery” is a fascinating game, isn’t it?

In any case, what Biden does has little to do with what Putin does. Each is responsible for their own choices and actions...although Biden is a senile potato and it’s probably unfair to prosecute someone who craps his pants.

Putin, however, has no such excuse and while it is unlikely to happen it would be nice to see his smarmy face in the dock in the Hague standing trial for war crimes.

Please clarify your claim.   Do you actually think that President Putin would be held back by a Communist Politburo second guessing his every decision?   You can say he wants a Russian Hegemony if that is what you mean, but he wouldn't want to be held back by a Soviet Union.

It's actually more about where the power elite are taking us. While Putin's ambitions are his alone, Biden is a figurehead for what he himself called a New World Order. Lot's of articles like this Joe Biden’s presidency might be liberal democracy’s last chance, all with the same theme; a global, interdependent consolidation of people, nations and economies with a goal of using human capital more wisely. These people are bad, and most are residents of Washington DC.

“Please clarify your claim.”

1. Putin has several times lamented the fall of the Soviet Union blaming it on various Western conspiracies. This is no secret.

2. On December 10, 2021 Putin’s government issued a list of eight demands to NATO and Article 4 of those eight demands required NATO to surrender the former Eastern European states.

When the Soviet Union fell apart there were only two networks that retained their operations, structure and cohesion. That was the intelligence services and the mobsters (the Russian mobs always operated in the shadows during the Soviet era, helping to grease the wheels of the party big wigs).

Those two networks became joined in league with each other to retain and grow the power they had, when the party and the appartchik were losing it. Their corruption and its hold on control of money and information made true free enterprise and open democracy unlikely to take hold. At one point the Economist magazine was reporting, after the Yeltsin era, that 60% of Russian banks, and 80% of the money in Russian banking, were owned or run by the Russian mob.

Putin came into it all from the KGB side of it, and is satisfied with the financial gains it means for him and the oligarchs that support him, the ones he does not need to have poisoned or imprisoned. I refer to the new Russian political system as a mobocracy and Putin as the current Godfather of it. The Russian legislature is just the biggest political rubber stamp that there ever was.
