Soul Train wasn’t around in 1968.

It had a good beat and was easy to dance to.

There’s nothing wrong with that! I sure wouldn’t have wanted any of the boys’ prizes! And they both got a car!

And the winners were a black couple. The losers all shook hands with one another and no one screamed “racism.”

I am old enough to have watched American Bandstand when it was broadcast from Philadelphia. I used to love to watch the big kids do the Stroll and other dances of the day.

There are quite a few YouTube videos of the old Philly shows. Not full episodes, but full songs.

The winners to me we are on another level. The runners up are too jumpy and jiggly for me.

Talking of Dick Clark, I happened to see the final episode Perry Mason last night and Dick Clark was the killer. While he seemed and sounded exactly like “ Dick Clark” he also managed to do a pretty good job of characterizing a TV writer who kills an egomaniacal actor and the show’s Producer. His admission of guilt for killing the former and claim of regret at “having to kill” the latter was pretty funny. I mean he’s sitting there talking exactly like Dick Clark admitting to murder. Then he suddenly goes very un Dick Clark and starts screaming.

Most of the girls I knew would have wanted the stereo. Hell with the kiddie bike…

“There’s nothing wrong with that!”

Exactly what I was saying. The “good old days” were good, indeed. None of the deep garbage we have to wade through everyday.

And everybody was laughing, having a good time, and getting along with each other.

AB was really a microcosm of the US, especially on the dance contests. Kids from all over would compete on their local station contests and the winners would be sent. A subsequent contest featured an Hispanic couple from El Paso, a couple from Oklahoma, and a couple from Ohio, as examples. A few of the regulars looked Asian and there were several regulars who were black. The awards were given on the basis of talent, as chosen by the viewers. I truly thought when I graduated from high school in 1970, that all vestiges of racism would be completely gone within the next few years. That was the way things were going at that time.
