Tech firms are buying up new washing machines so they can harvest their computer parts in a desperate bid to beat the global microchip shortage.
Once solely used in PCs and mobile phones, semiconductors are now vital in cars, kitchen appliances, TVs, smart speakers, thermostats, smart light bulbs and even some dog collars.
Microchip manufacturers are unable to meet the ever-growing demand – accelerated by families buying more computers and gadgets during lockdown – as it takes two years and billions of pounds to build each factory.

Maybe you’ll get lucky and the washing machines will revert to their perfectly-functional analog prior configurations.
Or you hit the wipers and the car goes into spin cycle!

my washer is from 2006...no fancy dancy electronic options...
same for my car. I figure they will both expire at about the same time
Maybe we will finally get a return to sanity in products. Thermostats, doorbells, refrigerators, washers and driers, dishwashers all were better before chips.
A simple timer is all you need in a washer and drier.
I actually have one of those that was from my great grandmother. I could use it along with my great grandfathers moonshine jug.
That’s why I flip the breaker to our new range when a electrical storm is brewing in the area.
Well, let’s get to building ‘em over here now, so that we’ll start having our own chips in 2024.

Do you remember the old Honeywell thermostat for house heating/cooling? I do and I miss it- stone simple and it never died.

A car that has a rinse cycle? I would pay extra for that.
Bad enough we have to worry about our catalytic converters. Now we have to fear coming hone and seeing our Maytag jacked up and parts missing.
