Oh I doubt all of them were overjoyed at the raping, exploitation and molestation. The adultery and sexual politics and heartbreak. The unwanted pregnancies, unwanted children - the terrible power dynamic of bastard kids. The STDs. The jealousy.

I think it was just a really corrupt culture. Like ours is getting to be.

I was told that the people of Pompeii considered the male appendage as a sign of prosperity. So there is that.

From the article.

“The House of Leda and the Swan fresco is one of 70 artworks featured in the exhibition, which is accompanied by an app and a guide contextualizing the show for children”.

HUH?

Why Was Erotic Art So Popular in Ancient Pompeii?

Because it was a sea side resort?

The Romans did take vacations to the seaside. Rent a little villa. Take that cute little eight year old slave you have had your eye on along in case you got bored with the gladiators.

“In the ancient Roman world, sexual pleasure was a cause for celebration rather than a source of shame.“

It was a morally depraved culture .

Pompeii was a significant seaport. It was frequented by sailors from many nationalities speaking foreign languages. When they visited the local “entertainment” establishments, they overcame the language barrier in explaining what they wanted to do or have done to them by pointing to frescoes and pictures of the acts.

This is in addition to general artwork on the subject that may be found anywhere.

Doesn’t have to be overly complicated.

Pagans have always included sexual acts in their religion.

I doubt it’s actually particular to pompeii. Pompeii is just better preserved thanks to its quick burial so not as much paint on the walls gets to flake off.

“In the ancient Roman world, sexual pleasure was a cause for celebration rather than a source of shame.”

Hence, their society collapsed.

At a time when sex was widely considered shameful or even obscene

Who writes and edits this drivel? When was sex considered shameful or obscene? It was all but commanded in the first pages of the Bible.

This is what you meant to say, Ms. Solly:

"At a time when depictions of sexual intercourse were widely considered shameful or obscene..."

Perhaps the most annoying thing about liberals is that they think they invented sex and understand it the best, when in fact they understand it the least.
