Not much for giving my hard earned money to scientologists.

Also having worked in the naval aviation maintenance field for almost 31 years....well let’s just say hollywood knows how to embellish a story to make it entertaining.

In that time I met my share of pilots and one thing that movie did do is give the pilots massive egos......THAT was accurate.

Not quite timely... I was a "Green Striper;" enlisted PHAN to be exact, and even way before Top Gun, "massive ego" was universal.

I have heard it said more than once that while no pilots will admit to it, "Top Gun" is one of their hokey "secret pleasures"...:)

As former flight deck personnel, always thought the intro to the original Top Gun was very, VERY well done.

I just watched the original recently (I have the 3D version!) and I still enjoyed it, even more so after watching this video by Ward Carroll (former Tomcat driver). LINK TO VIDEO: 21 Cringeworthy Errors in the Movie TOP GUN

But here are my favorites with the time into the movie where it occurs:

  1. (5:00) RIO’s radar presentation shows a 360-degree PPI presentation. Tomcat’s radar only sweeps 65 degrees either side of the nose. (Wouldn’t want a radar that pointed back at the crews. That would be a huge radiation hazard, to put it mildly.)

  2. (10:12) Cougar has a photo of his wife and baby taped over the airspeed gauge to the left of the altimeter. Meanwhile the vertical speed indicator shows he’s descending at 6,000 feet per minute, which would be an aggressive dive. At the same time the altimeter, which shows he’s at 31, 500 feet, is set to standby with the barometric pressure dialed to 28.32 when it should be at 29.92.

  3. (16:06) “Um, tower, there’s some dork riding a motorcycle down one of the taxiways shaking his fist at us.” (ME: LOL)

  4. (55:31) Why is Hollywood eating an orange on the flight line? (ME: as a former AD, this one just made me laugh!)

Anyway, Ward Carroll gave it a positive review: LINK TO VIDEO: Mooch's Review of TOP GUN MAVERICK

I haven't decided yet if I will see it or not.

First of all, in the Navy, they are Aviators. Pilots are people who guide ships into ports.

Naval fighter aviators and attack aviators always had really big egos. If you don’t, you are in the wrong business.
