Juneteenth celebrates the day news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas. It has been celebrated in Texas for years, by the decendants of the people whom the Emancipation Proclamation freed. About 2 years ago the national cultural appropriationists appropriated it as a national holiday, much like Cinco de Mayo. Its actual origins are now already almost lost to history...
Civil War, Lincoln’s assassination, emancipation of slaves... all important. Juneteenth is a minor footnote.
I am all for Juneteenth. Republicans are the anti-slavery party, so founded, so continued, and I rejoice at the end of chattel slavery. No problem.
There is no proof the word Juneteenth was ever uttered by a former slave. More likely, something a former slave owner may have attributed to a former slave to imply that class of person could not count past twelve and had no business making decisions in the voting booth.
My guess, most former adult slaves - even if they could not read - had the ability to count to 19.
No one outside of Texas ever heard of it until a couple of years ago when blm was causing trouble and making headlines.
If Democrats had their way black Americans would still be slaves. That is their history. When that didn’t work out for them they invented the New Deal as a substitute for outright slavery. For Decades that plan has worked quite effectively. Rewarding Laziness and envy for government handouts trumped everything the Republicans did to set them free.
