France's highest administrative court has upheld a ban on full-body "burkini" swimsuits in public pools, rejecting an appeal by the city of Grenoble.

But the court said it could not allow "selective exceptions to the rules to satisfy religious demands".
France has strict laws on which swimming costumes can be worn and the issue of religious expression in public places is divisive.
French opposition to the burkini stretches as far back as 2016, when several local municipalities attempted to outlaw it on beaches for violating the country's strict separation between religion and the state.
State officials are not allowed to wear religious emblems at work, but the mayor of Grenoble, Eric Piolle, argued that this should not stop users of public services, such as swimming pools, from dressing as they wish.
His administration's moves to relax the swimwear rules were opposed by the national government, which invoked a law passed last year to combat "Islamist separatism".
Critics of the burkini see it as offering a separatist vision of French society and argue that allowing it also puts pressure on Muslim women to wear it. Marine Le Pen has condemned the burkini as "clothing of Islamist propaganda".

As much as we love to pick on the French, they have shone some cojones re the Muzzies. Bank on the fact that our Department of (non-existent) Justice will take every chance to rule against Christains and for the gay/non-Muslim killers when given the chance.
Interesting.. Very different way to think about religious freedom and related issues cf to the US approach. It appears the French understand national unity/divisiveness issues better than we do.
Any religious person who thinks this is good is an idiot. Anyone who wants to live in a Western society and thinks this is good is an idiot. People want to criticize Big Tech, but let the government get away with this?
I am generally against all things muzzy, but I say if a woman wants to swim in her living room curtains, why not?

It doesn’t sound like you have much experience with Islam. The French are trying to keep that cancerous religion from making more inroads into their country than it already has. There are parts of north Paris around St Denis where the imans effectively run, you can’t walk the sidewalk without following their rules or you’ll be harassed. This isn’t about France trying to prevent freedom of religion, it’s about preventing Muslims from taking over areas and trying to force French citizens to conform to Islamic law.
I’ll probably get slammed, but I think women have a right to wear a swimsuit that upholds their view of modesty, even if it sends a religious message I may not agree with. It doesn’t harm anyone else, and as long as it’s not mandatory on everyone else, they can wear what they want. People who support this law out of anti-Muslim bias don’t seem to realize that similar laws have targeted public expressions of Christian belief, such as crucifixes.

That's the point that many here don't get. If you let Islam gain inroads then it WILL be forced on everyone. Islam seeks to dominate an area, the very word means submission. Islam does not peacefully co-exist with other religions and the French know this. We in America are naive about it, we think it's just like the Baptists living with Catholics, Jews with Lutherans, etc. Islam doesn't work that way.
The French have been dealing with Islam since 732 at the Battle of Tours when Charles Martel defeated them. If that hadn't happened there would be no western civilization today. There never would have been a renaissance or industrial revolution, and every person of European descent would be praying towards Mecca five times a day.

Islam has been around 1400 years, and it was never able to defeat Christianity or Western culture. Leftism has been around about 150 years, and it has almost destroyed Christianity and Western culture. Yet, you want to submit to something that isn’t even 1/1,000,000 of the threat? You want all religion and all freedom be destroyed? You are very foolish to trust the most greatest danger to everything we hold dear.
How do you figure that is submitting? Letting someone wear what they want.
As I said; as long as they aren't trying to force it on the rest of us.
