For many, after-work drinks are a common way of relaxing after a busy week.

But one worker in Japan could be nursing a protracted hangover after he lost a USB memory stick following a night out with colleagues.

Why? It contained the personal details of nearly half a million people.

The unnamed man placed the memory stick in his bag before an evening of drinking in the city of Amagasaki, north-west of Osaka.

He spent several hours drinking in a local restaurant before eventually passing out on the street, local media reported.

“We deeply regret that we have profoundly harmed the public’s trust in the administration of the city,” an Amagasaki city official told a press conference.

I wonder what the response of a US government would be in the same situation...

This is why public employees should have to carry a modern version of an Osborn transportable PC ... no way you forget it’s not on you, and then there’s the exercize value.

The US government (and California gun control boards) just do it the old fashioned way.

Never update your servers, never apply security patches and leave information and passwords in plain text on unprotected servers.

one of my best buds teaches English in Japan. Everyday he shakes his head on every Friday, “salarymen” (office workers) would blow their paychecks at the local bars.

I think they do it a lot more often than on Fridays. I’ve wondered if, combined with the hours, it had something to do with the death rate of company men in Japan.

But to be honest, the most likely place for that to happen is Amagazaki

Not to worry.

Google can replace it all for a small fee.

My best bud who works in a certain prefecture away from Tokyo told me one story which he confirms to be truthful. About one of the big Jap companies sending their workers to the US subsidiary to learn our ways. I think it was Honda.

Once 5 PM struck, everyone packed their gear like clockwork. The Japanese dude continued to work, and was shocked why everyone left on the dot. His American co-workers had to explain to him that in America, work stops at 5. Over there, it is frowned upon to leave at 5 or 6 pm, depending on the company hours which they see as rude.

I can see this nightly around Tokyo. We have a great drinking culture here.

I have NEVER lost a thumbdrive, memory card or any other micro storage device.

Reckless negligence. He deserves what’s coming his way.

(Footnote: Neither have I ever lost a set of keys)

I have never misplaced car keys or forgotten a mobile phone.

It helps never owning them to begin with!

Reminds me of the movie “Gung Ho” with Michael Keaton trying to save the car factory.

“Oh yeah!? Well if your way is so great, how come you lost the big one!?”

Oops - above is a better clip pertaining to the thread.

“Mr. Saki would like to leave work as his wife his having their baby.”

“Is this true Mr. Saki?”

“No sir. I would like to stay here and work!”

It’s worse even - based on what I’ve been told, one does not leave the office until the boss leaves.
