Cruise ship in trouble -- again
web | self

Posted on 07/07/2022 9:16:06 AM PDT by George from New England

Norwegian Sun also known as the ICEBERG SHIP. It is in trouble as I speak. https://www.cruisemapper.com/?imo=9218131 It sat in Seattle for close to week after the incident 10 days or so ago. Sailed yesterday on an 8 day trip. Only 24 hours out and enroute back. Says Victoria BC now

Last bearing about 240 degrees true. Not north as itinerary would call for.

The ship hit a growler on the 25th of last month.

Wonder if this is related to that...

So you are saying this must be a test sailing and the itinerary is simply the one of record. Could be.

The “experts” told us all the icebergs would be melted by now by global warming.

Oops.

The two sailings, due to depart on June 30 and July 5, were cancelled so repairs could be made to the ship, which was sailing to the Hubbard Glacier when it hit the ‘growler’ – an iceberg that has less than 3.3ft showing above the water line.

In a fog, in iceberg infested waters, one would think the ship would carry sonar to detect their approach on any icebergs. After all, if 90% of the iceberg is below the water, that 3 ft iceberg could still be close to 30 feet tall.

Two decades old and just the abstract, but interesting...

Growler detection in sea clutter with coherent radars

I think the cruise line has some 'splainin to do...

I’m seeing the July 5 cruise was cancelled. So this is maybe a sea trial.
