Saying monkeypox is tearing through communities of queer men isn’t stigmatising – being afraid to say it is
The Guardian (UK) via MSN ^ | 2022-07-26 | Owen Jones

Not since the gruesome heyday of HIV/Aids has a virus been such a threat to the lives of men who have sex with men. As monkeypox rips through queer communities, particularly in London, the cruel legacy of that pandemic casts an unnerving shadow. Conversations in LGBTQ+ spaces – from Highgate men’s pond in the capital to bars and clubs in urban centres – turn anxiously to this new threat.

Those who have had the virus share their experiences: some mild symptoms, others painful and miserable. WhatsApp groups ping with pictures of gay and bisexual men proudly displaying plaster-covered upper arms to confirm they’ve been vaccinated in a flashback to the peak of the national Covid trauma. On the gay hookup app Grindr, some use their profiles to announce they’re abstaining from sexual contact until their scheduled vaccination; in queer clubs, some choose to skip the ritual taking-off of T-shirts, fearing the prolonged skin-on-skin contact of an intimate dance will put them at risk.

At least somebody in that "community" is getting real. Note that though this is a leftist source, it is not from a USA Democrat.

Shouldn’t we be saying persons who identify as men having sex with persons identifying as men?

You are not kidding, my friend!
When I saw that this was from the Guardian my jaw dropped.
I have a lot of teacher friends who are left leaning (I myself am also a teacher, albeit one of the very few right-leaning ones.) and they all know exactly the scoop with Monkey Pox.
The most shocking is a good friend of mine who was married for thirty years until her husband decided he was gay and left her for another man.
“I hope they BOTH get a scorching case of it right in their ****-holes!”

This woman is an ardent liberal, but you know... when things don’t go their way, boom... the real fascist comes out of them.

Not that I don’t agree they (those two in particular) deserve the excruciating bootie pox.

not hardly. its more scare mongering.

If you have a million people in a group and 3000 of them have become sick from something, is it statistically reasonable to start forcing all of them to take action? I am no epidemiologist, but 3000\1000000 is not a significant threshold to my thinking. Three thousandths of one percent is nothing to be alarmed by.

And with adequate self control, it would be easy to just socially ostracize anyone that you have suspicions about. If you’re a perv, I don’t accept you as normal. Not with the risk of death and disease. That’s Your Problem.

And really, this is less about the group than the behavior- The behavior is that of having more than one sex partner. There are other STDs that do the same thing. Some of them are deadly, yet the behavior persists. STDs don’t transmit into a larger group or community if people are monogamous. Does your wife or husband give you an STD if they are faithful to you? Pretty unlikely unless they had it before you both became monogamous with each other. Even then, you both are not spreading it to other people if you are monogamous.

Not very Christian of me perhaps, but if you are a leper, i’m not Jesus, and I can’t heal you. I’ll pray for you and perhaps feed you, but you stay over there.

Why? Because the illness has entered networks of men who enjoy having sex with multiple sexual partners. And here is where avoiding stigmatisation is important. There is nothing wrong with liking sex with lots of other people, including anonymous partners

I don't even know what to say.

Do you know what has killed the most soldiers in human history?

disease

Do you know what caused the disease?

human POOP

So... one shouldn’t be surprised when you stick your pecker into a dirty hairy exit hole of another man used for expelling human waste (ie. POOP) that you catch some nasty diseases!

This is just basic hygiene information.

I remember when AIDS was starting to spread. At first we didn't know if it was transmissible by air or mosquito. The CDC had to tread a thin line. They had to pretend that everyone could potentially get it, but they couldn't say that it was an existential threat because of who was mostly getting it. It was only much later that they "found out" that we couldn't get it from coughs or mosquitos.

Saying it was the "gay disease" was just as bad then as called COVID the "China virus" is today.

I'm surprised they are treating this just as a disease that anyone can get and not warning people to not be that concerned for fear that it will stigmatize their favorite "community".

Monkeypox has a mortality rate of 3.6%. It's not a threat to the lives of homosexuals like HIV/AIDS was.

No. Groups such as gays need to solve the problems they create for themselves.
