MADISON, Wis. — It’s sadly not new for a business on Madison’s east side, but EVP Coffee’s owner calls the latest burglary a one-two punch — showing a side of her neighborhood she never expected to see.
“There was glass everywhere, the cash register was thrown on the floor,” owner Tracy Danner said.
Danner’s general manager encountered quite the mess Wednesday morning at EVP Coffee.
“The door was open, the ATM was stolen,” Danner said.
As shocking as it looks, it wasn’t the first time this has happened. It’s Danner’s second break-in at the East Washington Avenue location in 10 weeks and among 15 she’s experienced in her 25 years in business.
“This one really felt hurtful, it felt bad and it felt different,” she said, “it felt more violating than ever before.”
Now, Danner said she doesn’t know if she can keep up with this level of crime in her Madison neighborhood.
“I won’t continue to do this if this is the new normal,” she said.
The crime is new but thankfully not normal yet to the owners of the new Aftershock Arcade nearby.
“Obviously someone getting burglarized just down the street is a concern,” co-owner Brad Van said.
On the east side for less than a year, Van said they haven’t had anything like that happen, but it’s on his mind.
“At close, we have had some of our bartenders share concerns with us that they don’t want to be working the shift by themselves so we don’t staff people alone,” he said.
Still, business owners here like Danner love their neighborhood.
“I promised myself I would never put bars on my windows,” she said. “You know, I don’t want to be afraid of my community. I don’t want to send that message. I love my community.”
Customers, nearby businesses, and neighbors showed they love her too, offering support on social media and in-person since she re-opened Thursday.
“I realize that it’s meaningful what we’re doing and it matters and it matters to people so that makes it worth it for me as well,” she said.
While she’s been offered help, Danner said they are able to cover the repairs.
“I just feel so much gratitude to this community for the support and love and they’re acknowledging who we are to them,” she said.
Damages are unknown because she is responsible for the missing ATM, and she doesn’t know how much money is inside.
Still, she said the community support assured her that this won’t be a defining moment.
“I’m staying with love and I’m staying with kindness you know and I believe we all deserve it. So, I’m going to keep showing up that way,” she said.

Move instead.
“I won’t continue to do this if this is the new normal,” she said.“
Just out of curiosity, hon, who’d you vote for?
Then just get fancy ones and call them “window enhancements” instead.
(I really should be charging liberals for my advice.)
Madison’s devolution is completely on the insane lesbian mayor. Crime in Madison is quickly spiraling out of control. Even my 20-something year old son said downtown Madison is beginning to resemble Portland.
Shootings are way up all over, and almost exclusively in the heavier minority areas. Look, former mayor Soglin was a 60s hippy, but he wasn’t insane and he understood business needsand safety. The current mayor his a devoted Marxist who never misses an opportunity to engage in national political matters in the most pugnatious possible way, all while her city is beginning to burn to the ground. And she doesn’t seem to care, beyond possibly hiring more social workers rather than cops.
It will be very interesting to see what the pain threshold is for city residents. I predict that many of the small businesses will begin to pull out of Madison leaving only the big national companies who have a higher tolerance for robbery, theft, and organized shoplifting.
And it's lovin' you right back.
After the 2020 RIOTS on State Street (University Campus) SIXTY-TWO businesses moved out!

That’s a rather shocking statistic.
Get out now with a whole skin Ms. Danner. America is a big country, and many areas are civilized.
but keep voting dem
that is very important
if you want more of this
nope nope and nope
she should stay and fix this mess
those civilized areas are in red states and
she will not see the error of her voting ways
Reopen in Galt-land.
Oh well. Sucks to be her.
I think that's supposed to read "Madison, WI." If so, that's where U of Wisconsin is. So I'm taking a wild guess here and assuming U of Wisconsin is a wildly far-left liberal institution, even though I've never been there and know almost nothing about it. I further assume that "people of color" are responsible for the vast majority of the store burglaries going on in that town. BTW, the phrase "people of color" is totally asinine because every person has color. But if the clueless Democrats/RINOs are somehow right, then from now on, all white people should synonymously be referred to as "people of non-color." On second thought, the stupefied Democrats/RINOs might actually make that a new common identifier.
You'd think the moronic Democrat/RINO PhD professors at that college would be smart enough to know that "people of color" is nonsensical. But no, they probably all cluelessly mouth the phrase "people of color" over and over again, like mindless lemmings.
Am I completely right in my WAGs about what's going on at that school?
They need to relocate to a red state, once they’ve learned from their error. Until the majority of the people in these localities learn their lesson, it will only get worse for businesses. We need electoral colleges on the precinct level.
The problem being you'll have to patiently wait for senile Sleepy Joe's handlers to push through yet another new, tax-and-spend, free-money "stimulus" program before those liberals will be able to pay you for your advice.
Look it up.....
UW Madison is west side of town relatively low crime; west side is a pit
Meant east side is a pit
