Did they have it posted outside?
Did they warn you when you booked the room?
They’re betting you won’t sue.

Did they confiscate it, or simply detain it? :-)

One of the reasons I stay at places where I handle my own bags and park my own car.

FWIW here is one article regarding recent Las Vegas Casino policies on guns.

Why would anyone leave bags containing firearms with the bellhop unless they are Saturday Night Specials?

Did he call the police and report the theft?

I don't know, probably because of the mass shooting at that concert. Liability clause in fine print?

Never give someone else who is not fully aware that they are being handed a firearm your luggage. Bad form in all circumstances.

This video has been floating around for a while. The guy is a jerk, and a drunk. Dumped bag with the valet, rather than securing it and the contained gun in his room. He was more interested in going out and getting drunk then taking care of his own gun.

No. Charge them with illegal search. A cop can’t search without permission or warrant. A stupid hotel clerk can’t search period.

It is private property. They can deny you entrance unless you follow their rules. Best to know the rules before you book.
