Too often, diabetes and hearing loss go together (Prediabetes = 30% higher risk, diabetes = 200% higher risk)
Medical Xpress / HealthDay / American Diabetes Association ^ | Sept. 5, 2022 | American Diabetes Association

Though it's not clear how diabetes may be related to hearing loss, many people experience both conditions simultaneously.

About 37 million Americans have diabetes, estimates the American Diabetes Association. Meanwhile, about 34.5 million of them also have some type of hearing loss.

Experiencing hearing loss is twice as common in people with diabetes as it is in those who don't have the condition, according to a recent study. Even for the 133 million people with prediabetes, the rate of hearing loss is 30% higher than in those with normal blood sugar.

The reason may be that high blood sugar levels may damage the small blood vessels in the inner ear, the association suggests. This would be similar to the way in which diabetes can damage the eyes and the kidneys.

The association advises that people who suspect they're losing their hearing to talk to their primary care doctors, and then potentially get help from an audiologist, a licensed hearing aid dispenser or a doctor who specializes in hearing problems.

Signs of hearing loss include frequently asking others to repeat themselves, having trouble following conversations that involve more than two people, and thinking that others are mumbling. They can also include problems hearing in noisy places such as busy restaurants, trouble hearing the voices of women and small children, and turning up the TV or radio volume too loud for others.

Hmm.

Mrs R2 recently passed from prediabetic to diabetic. And I swear her hearing has decreased.

Just an FYI...decreased intestinal alkaline phosphatase can increase chance of diabetes. . you have to get the alp isoenzyme test which Drs don’t order but you can get it from Ultalabs

It’s worth looking into how you can increase IAP. Still searching. One medicine is in trial but am seeing beef kidneys might do it.

Oh .and don’t want to try to increase IAP if you don’t know your level because high IAP causes issues too

True. I’ve been married 42 years and I just read something last week that rings very very true.

75% of marriage is all about one person shouting “What?” to another person in another room.

Good to know. Fortunately my wife is being very proactive about her diabetes. She’s lost 30 pounds so far since last November. Slow but sure.

My girlfriend is a Korean American whose son still lives in the ROK. I met him for the first time last July during our visit there. He told me he was an artillery gunner in the ROK Army and despite being only 32 he has partial hearing loss.

There is no excuse for T2 diabetes. Nearly all who are diagnosed can easily reverse it and all consequent symptoms before permanent damage is induced.

The basic cause in many cases is being overweight. If your physician tells you that you are diabetic or pre-diabetic you need to lose some pounds and change your eating habits immediately. Maybe getting off the sofa and walking 20 minutes a day could save your life for a while.

Obesity has more than 30 co-morbidities. You can kid yourself that your fat isn’t part of the problem but it’s something you can fix if you care enough.

I convinced the VA to get me hearing aids which come along with a little monthly stipend. Does South Korea have benefits for their vets?

My guess is that they do but he didn’t mention getting any benefits himself. He did say that his hearing loss wasn’t huge...but was enough to be measurable by a hearing test.
