The small bridge was built to help locals cross a river during the rainy season. The temporary structure that was there before the bridge used to break frequently, the news agency said in its report.

One of the videos shows officials standing on the bridge to formally inaugurate it during an official event. The inauguration would have been complete with the cutting of a red ribbon tied at one end of the bridge. But as soon as one of the delegates - a woman - took out scissors to cut the ribbon, the bridge succumbed to the pressure of the officials.

The video shows that the female official seeking help and ready to jump to safety.

The security personnel immediately rush to the spot and drag the woman from the falling bridge.

You know, I actually feel kind of bad for them. The idea that such an unremarkable small bridge would have a red ribbon cutting dignitary ceremony says as much as it’s failure.
We shouldn’t be cruel to those people, but we should pay attention to not buy into the idea that people like that have answers for us either.
That is how we got the bridge failure in Miami

Chinese Engineering?
That does not even look like a real bridge, more like a stage for the photo op.

Watched the video. So the ribbon was what was holding the whole thing together?

That ribbon was the only thing holding up the bridge. Bad idea to cut it.

That was hysterical. What did they build the bridge from? Chewing gum and string? All the funnier for aggrandizement of having an official cut a tape on it, then the immediate collapse.

It appears that the ribbon was the only thing holding the bridge up!

If not Chinese engineering, certainly crappy Chinese building materials. And in typical Third World fashion, you can be sure theft, embezzlement and nepotism were built into the project. Still it’s rather sad to think the entire world is watching this clip and laughing at the Africans. With little access to reliable transport, the locals have to walk everywhere and depend on simple paths and bridges, esp. during their rainy season.

They should have used a flatbed railcar. They make good bridges for crossing small channels.
