Sources: Panthers Trading Star Christian McCaffrey to 49ers
ESPN ^ | 10/21 | David Newton

The San Francisco 49ers are sending second-, third- and fourth-round picks in 2023 and a fifth-round pick in 2024 to the Carolina Panthers for star running back Christian McCaffrey, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday night.

The deal gives San Francisco the offensive weapon needed to compete for a Super Bowl. It also gives McCaffrey a chance to be on a winning team for the first time since his rookie season in 2017 when Carolina went 11-5 and return to the Bay Area where he starred in college at Stanford.

When healthy, McCaffrey is one of the best dual threats in the NFL. In 2019, he became only the third player in NFL history to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season. His 670 yards from scrimmage -- a team-leading 393 yards rushing and team-leading 33 catches for 277 yards -- this season ranks fourth in the NFL.

RBs never last long. They get beat up quickly.

True. But there’s always Frank Gore.

I don’t think they should have traded for him. They are already too much of a “win now” team without a quarterback.

There a lot of teams in the hunt "without a quarterback". Jalen Hurts is hardly a household name. Kirk Cousins is nobody special. Daniel Jones was considered a bust by many. These teams are on top of their divisions or have very good records.

You can win a Super Bowl with a Nick Foles, a Brad Johnson, even a Trent Dilfer.

Garoppolo brought them to the Super Bowl before, so he can do it again. They aren't Buffalo, or even KC, but Eli Manning and Nick Foles weren't GOAT, except for three times. Football is funny.

For the record, I despise the 49ers, and hope the trade doesn't work out, and that they wasted the salary space.

I think Kirk Cousins is pretty good. He passed for 4,000 yards three times on Redskins team that had nothing. Some of those years they had no decent receive.

You are right about Dilfer, although I think he made the Pro Bowl in '98, he was not that great they won the Super Bowl, or most other years. Brad Johnson was not that bad. Nick Foles is an awesome quarterback, if he's on a team with decent coaches. He could have been league MVP in 2013. Eli Manning is not an elite quarterback, but he played well enough a few times.

But you give the quarterback all credit, even if he's carried by the other 21 starters. In 2019, Garoppolo was okay at best, but he was surrounded by a great team.

Garoppolo and especially Shanahan are programmed to do terrible in the fourth quarter, if they had a lead.

I predicted in September 2019, that if the 49ers made the Super Bowl, they will lose after having a double digit lead in the 4th quarter.

Buffalo and Kansas City should have little problem if it gets that far.

If the 49ers had a coach to come in for the 4th quarter, they could beat Buffalo or KC. Have you see their defense?

I am happy for Christian, he is an outstanding player, on a team that does not know how to utilize him. Run him a few times, pass to him a lot out of the backfield and line him up as a WR. The dude just has IT.

My very young brother-in-law played for Stanford when McCaffery was there. Often, we’d hang out with Christian’s parents, after the games and outside the stadium, if we all were visiting from Colorado. Nice, down to earth family and fantastic family community under Coach Shaw. The good old days... sigh.

“The San Francisco 49ers are sending second-, third- and fourth-round picks in 2023”

They also don’t have a first rounder in 2023 which they gave to Miami to move up and select Trey Lance.

This is s risky move and if they are a win now team they better win now because if they don’t it usually falls off a cliff.

AYFKM?

He’s the core of the pathetic Panthers and they are trading him away?

Gonna have to get rid of my Panther hat...they are no longer interested in winning.

All too recently. I'm a Rams fan.

Nice! Yeah, I just happened to peek in on a bit of that! Can’t believe it’s been five years since my bro last played. Was cool to get to hang a bit with Luck and Hogan at family events. Great kids!

I really think that KC and Buffalo are a full bracket above any team in the NFC, the way they are playing right now.
