A Florida woman was arrested on Thanksgiving after driving recklessly toward a closed course for a 5K turkey trot that was in progress, according to WESH.
Some 3,000 runners were participating in the Coffee Pot Turkey Trot in St. Petersburg, Florida, when Ashlee Lauren Morgan, 38, was “driving recklessly south on Coffee Pot Boulevard Northeast, approaching the Snell Isle Bridge,” according to the St. Petersburg police department.
She was pulled over and three officers requested her credentials. She refused, according to reports, and fled the scene “at a high rate of speed onto the race course.” Another officer attempted to pull her over at Snell and Brightwater Boulevards, but she went past two marked cars with their emergency lights on and several caution cones, police said.
Officers had to force her to stop at the intersection of Brightwater Boulevard and Lamara Way Northeast. Morgan became hostile during her arrest, according to WESH, and she banged her head against the rear windows of the police car and tried to flee while being handcuffed, was combative. A police statement said officers had to use OC spray (a type of mace spray) on two separate occasions to get Morgan to cooperate.
In an affidavit given to WFLA, officials said if officers did not stop Morgan she would have “barreled through the intersection causing mass [casualties] to race participants.”

Why did they depend on her stopping and not block her, knowing she was fleeing authorities and entering pedestrian traffic at a high rate of speed?
“The race was not affected at all,” race director, Monica Kile, told Runner’s World by e-mail. “Police detained the woman well before runners ever made it to that part of the course.”
Those 2 statements in the same article sure do contradict themselves.
