American Airlines is closing its San Francisco crew base and asking 400 flight attendants to leave California or leave the airline

American Airlines is closing its San Francisco base, potentially displacing 400 flight attendants.

Two-thirds have worked for the airline for 13 years or more, according to union calculations.

10 flight attendants told Insider a myriad of factors make it difficult to leave the Bay Area.

The mass email hit some flight attendants' inboxes mid-flight.

"Today it's with great regret that I let you know about our decision to close the SFO flight attendant base," American Airlines executive Brady Byrnes said in the September memo obtained by Insider.

In closing its San Francisco base, citing economic factors and shifting customer demand, American presented 400 flight attendants with a choice that many said felt impossible to make: leave the airline or leave the state.

The base is home to some of the carrier's most senior flight attendants, two-thirds of whom have been at the airline for 13 years or more, according to the union representing American Airlines flight attendants. By January 31, they must select an airport from a list of the airline's hubs outside of California to work out of. For those who can't or won't, the only options are to retire early (if eligible) or resign, the union told Insider.

“10 flight attendants told Insider a myriad of factors make it difficult to leave the Bay Area”

They’re asking 400 to move and only TEN are complaining????

Heck that sounds like a win win to me.

Also. I suspect 10 are probably heavily invested in the San Francisco “lifestyle”.......if you know what I mean.

But where are they going to find a gaggle of 50 year old fat women to replace them?

However, you can be sure AA will continue to donate to Democrats.

The more I travel by air, the more convinced I am that number is close to 90% across all airlines. IMHO it was their candyland before the military opened up to them.

There’s a simple solution: Just get a cheap apartment at one of the approved airport cities and keep your California residence. Share the apartment with four or five other flight attendants. Do they still get unlimited free travel on the airline to get back to the Bay Area?

People in the airline industry are used to that model.

I agree with your solution. Airline employees can live almost anywhere they want. I am sure a small percentage will not move, but that will always occur.

I still doubt that Newsom got the message that tax policies on business matter, especially when major cities are transitioning into cesspools.

My nephew’s wife was headhunted and hired by an airline as flight attendant. She’s mid-40s and definitely not fat. She’s an RN, has been a pediatric nurse for over 20 years.

Airlines are looking for older flight attendants. Health care professionals and ex-law enforcement are high on the list. She said the pay is excellent and there’s a suprising amount of time off. I was surprised she quit nursing, but I guess over two decades of working with sick and dying kids takes it’s toll.

There’s lots of gay men in the travel industry. What’s your point? They are typically single and can travel easily. Envious of their disposable income?

I’ve known a couple of people in the industry who think nothing of living remotely and commuting on a two hour flight to get to their home base for assignments. It’s much ado about nothing.

You know, no where in either the original post or mine were “gay men” mentioned until your response.

Being a nurse was required for the original flight attendants.

Yep my sister was a 39 year Delta / Western flight attendant whom retire in 2020. For a number of years she was based out of Atlanta but lived in San Fran. She and about 10 others split the rent on a two bedroom Atlanta apartment. Rarely were there more than 2 or 3 of the Flight attendants in town for layovers to fight over the two bedrooms. Usually the work week was 3 or 4 days. Fly home from Atlanta for a 3 or 4 day weekend. Finally she was able to transfer to LAX making life much nicer.
