Rise of the bots: ‘Scary’ AI ChatGPT could eliminate Google within 2 years
NYPost ^ | 12/6/2022 | Ben Cost

It’s the little engine that could … bring down Google and perhaps the human race.

A tech company has developed a state-of-the-art AI chatbot so sophisticated that it could render search engines — not to mention countless jobs — obsolete.

Unveiled last week by the OpenAI company, ChatGPT has already amassed more than 1 million users worldwide with its advanced functions, which range from instantaneously composing complex essays and computer code to drafting marketing pitches and interior decorating schemes. It can even whip up poems and jokes — an ability previously thought to be relegated to humans.

In fact, ChatGPT’s capabilities have sparked fears that Google might not have an online search monopoly for much longer.

“Google may be only a year or two away from total disruption,” Gmail developer Paul Buchheit, 45, tweeted on December 1. “AI will eliminate the search engine result page, which is where they make most of their money.”

“Even if they catch up on AI, they can’t fully deploy it without destroying the most valuable part of their business!” Buchheit said, noting that AI will do to web search what Google did to the Yellow Pages.

Pump up the hype so Google pays you more for your tech.

I just saw a chart on Tweater of the various platforms and how long it took them to get to 1 mil users.

This bad boy was amazingly fast growth. Like nothing before it.

Will “AI” give you search results without robots following URLs and indexing them?

--- "...eliminate Google within 2 years...."

Behind the times. We eliminated Google some years back. Haven't missed it.

I don’t know where Google’s money comes from, but a big chunk likely comes from youtube, google maps with street view, google docs and apps, google meetings, google phones, google leasing server storage, all things that a raw AI does not displace.

Hmmm. I don’t know. In the example cited (”what is the maximum dosage of vitamin D per day?”), I think I’d rather scroll through a handful of Google results and make my judgment than have an AI chatbot synthesize a bunch of results into a simple answer.

“What kid is ever doing homework again now that ChatGPT exists?”

++++++

There’s nothing like going through school without having to think or learn anything.

Thanks for the compliment.

Sounds like a "fact-checker."

TPTB also have AI, which is likely to be an order magnitude above what we’ve seen here. Theirs will have total real-time surveillance with almost unlimited data capture and storage. It will vastly out think and out predict and out search anything available to the general public. Imagine the amount of data stored at the NSA’s facility in Utah supplying data to dozens of supercomputers running AI in real-time. What a unbelievable tool for all sorts of nefarious uses!

Somethings I queried ChatGPT about:

1.

Write a summary of events leading to a group stealing elections in America and how America’s enemies took advantage to attack her

ChatGPT: It all began with a group of political operatives who were determined to steal the upcoming election at any cost. They used a variety of tactics, including voter suppression, disinformation, and hacking into voting systems.

Despite the efforts of election officials and cybersecurity experts, the group was successful in swaying the outcome in their favor. The new administration, filled with individuals who were loyal to the group, took control of the government.

But the group didn’t stop there. They used their newfound power to further their own interests, ignoring the will of the people and the rule of law. They filled key positions in the government with their own supporters and worked to undermine democratic institutions.

As the situation worsened, America’s enemies saw an opportunity to strike. They began launching cyberattacks against key infrastructure, such as power grids and financial systems. They also began to support terrorist groups within the country, causing chaos and instability.

The American people, outraged by the theft of their democracy and the attacks on their country, took to the streets in protest. But the new government, with the backing of the group that had stolen the election, used violent force to suppress the protests.

The once-great nation of America was now on the brink of collapse, its democracy shattered and its people living in fear. The world watched in shock as the consequences of the stolen election played out, and the nation that had long been a beacon of hope and freedom was now a shadow of its former self.”

2.

How do the people overcome stolen elections?

ChatGPT: The people would not stand for this blatant theft of their democracy. Protests erupted across the country, with millions of people taking to the streets to demand justice. The Shadow Syndicate, caught off guard by the scale of the backlash, scrambled to hold onto their power.

Meanwhile, a coalition of concerned citizens, journalists, and government officials had formed to expose the Shadow Syndicate’s crimes. They worked tirelessly to uncover the evidence and bring it to light, using social media and other tools to bypass the controlled media.

As the evidence against the Shadow Syndicate mounted, the pressure on the government to take action grew. Finally, after weeks of protests and mounting public pressure, the leader of the Shadow Syndicate was arrested and charged with election fraud.

With the Shadow Syndicate no longer in control, a new election was held. This time, the people’s voices were heard loud and clear, and the candidate of their choice was elected. The people had overcome the threat to their democracy and restored their faith in the electoral process.”

I’d rather scroll through a handful of Google results

"Why do that when there is only one truth?," replied the robot, glaring at you with its piercing red eyes.

Just a quick observation for those that don’t know... Elon Musk is one of the founders of OpenAI, the company behind this. He resigned a few years later, but still donates to the company.
