What I’d like to know is why the hell we still have “public” libraries. I know the ones in Phoenix are used as a place where the “homeless” can go to clean up, take a dump and wash their clothes. With almost all homes now having access to the internet, why do we need libraries? Turn them into public toilets for the homeless. It would make more sense.

I still remember my 4th grade field trip to the local library, and the stern library lady, warning us that if we didn't bring back the book in time, that there would be a 2 cent fine per day.

We personally borrow books and DVDs from the library. I am not saying it is worth what it costs, and the book selection in Phoenix is poor, but some folks use them for the old reason. Also, I have known local groups to borrow the meeting rooms for free (including conservative groups).

I live in a small town of 2500 people in south central NH.
We currently have a town library built in the 1800s of about 2000 sq ft.
However, a woman left $1MM in her estate to build a new library. All good right.
Well the library trustees are not happy building a $1MM library. They are going to spend that $1MM plus even more to build a library for little old ladies to have meetings.
That is because the only people that go to the library are little old ladies.
Meanwhile we do need to rebuild the town hall that was originally opened in 1805. Estimates to rebuild it came in just over $2 million.
