In the 1960s and '70s, facial hair -- including mustaches, sideburns, goatees, Van Dykes, soul patches, mutton or lamb chops and other creative topiary -- was a means of free expression and identity. The 1950s had been an era of extreme clean-shavenness; in movies of the time, a 5 o'clock shadow was a visual shorthand for intoxication or derangement. As young men threw off the shackles of conformity, they began experimenting with facial hair. From the beatniks' goatees and Van Dykes to full hippie beards, and then into the '70s with massive sideburns and pimp-ish mustaches. If you could grow it on your face, you had free rein to do so.

Had the day off today, and watched an episode of "That Girl", I know Marlo Thomas.
Well anyway, Donald Hollinger grew a beard while on assignment, and Marlo hates hit. Marlo's father calls him a communist.
Well to get back today, it seems all the commie soyboys, are clean shaven.

Personally, I prefer the Grizzly Adams look.
Works for me.
And my girlfriend likes it.
So why shave anything but my neck?

I hope the wino-stubble look goes away, but I don’t expect that it will very soon.

Moved up to Connecticut from the south in 1980 - first time I got my (long bushy) hair cut the barber said: "man, nobody wears Elvis sideburns up here".
OK, then take 'em off - don't want a bunch of Yankees making fun of me....

Drugs did this.
Even people who never used drugs were influenced and followed suit.

I remember that episode faintly. Poor Donald, all she had to do was bat those false eyelashes and he was a goner.

Not a fan of facial hair.
I often refer to a walrus-type mustache as “the full David Crosby.”

At ten years of age watching “Quentin” on Dark Shadows I swore a mighty oath that a soon as I could I’d have giant mutton chops like him.

Only Toshiro Mifune can rock a Man Bun. They should be prohibited by law for anyone else.

Mine is trimmed a bit shorter than that - but that's basically what I have.
But strangely, when I was 20, it would not grow on my cheeks -
so I had a goatee (way) back then.
